This year's Floral Park Youth Council 5K one mile and pee wee runs are scheduled for May 31. This year the race will start and end inside Belmont Park Racetrack as part of the Belmont Stakes Festival. The pee wee run will start at 10:05 a.m. and the one mile run at 10:10 a.m. and the 5K at 10:40 a.m. Following the races there will be refrehments and a raffle for the runners while the awards are given out. This promises to be a fun-filled day for both runners and spectators alike.
Race day is more than an opportunity for runners to compete against their peers. The pee wee run, a short run for kids 7 and under, is as much fun for the parents as the kids. The kids receive a T-shirt (while they last) an official race number and a ribbon just for entering. The one miler is a "fun" run where everyone's goal is just to finish. The 5K is a 3.1 mile race and is for the more serious runner. There will be T-shirts for the 5K and one mile runners.
The Youth Council is a non-profit organization which develops and runs programs for children. Proceeds from the race will go to the Youth Council's teen and youth programs, including its teen center where local teens gather on Friday and Saturday evenings. The entry fee for runners is $13 and the 5K and 1 mile and $7 for the pee wee, if pre-registered. Applications are available at the Floral Park Exercise & Fitness Center at the corner of Jericho and South Tyson and the Floral Park Library. You can also call 352-3824 or 775-4040.
