The boys JV basketball team defeated Herricks 46-33 to raise their record to 5-6. John Cesarano led all scorers with 20 points. Brian Baebler scored 11 points, Brian Magone 8 points, Scott Mackenzie 5 points and Liam Dooley 2 points. Carey came out strong, opened up the game with a 10-0 run and never trailed in the game.
The Carey varsity boys basketball team beat Herricks 58 to 55 in a game which was decided in the closing seconds. Greg Beck and JP Dakis had their best games of the year to lead all scores with 18 points each. Gin Gin Aragon controlled the offense and Marcus Maddonado, Rich Pierre and Mike Spano controlled the boards. The boys are now 4 and 5 in the league and still have a good shot at the playoffs.
The Lady Seahawks varsity basketball team won their first game by defeating Great Neck South 44-38. Erica Brennan scored a game high 13 points and Eryn Miller and Kim Lapinski each had 10 points. The Lady Seahawks used a 19-6 rally in the third quarter to fuel the win.
At the Nassau County winter track championships, Carey had two athletes receive all county honors. Crystal Cammarano placed second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:04. This is the fourth time she has reached this level of achievement. For the first time after years of hard work, Alonzo Haughton seeded fourth in the 600, ran a gutsy race to place second in a time of 1:28. The foursome of Alonzo Haughton, Tino Ienopoli, Reonard Lamour and Mark Levy ran 1:41 in the 4x200 relay, breaking their own school record.
Five Sewanhaka district wrestlers placed in the Wheatley Invitational. Gerard Daddino, Matt Daddino and Mickey Parris each placed first in their respective weight classes. Ashraf Al-Abdullah placed second in the tournament and Anthony Burdi placed third. Overall the team finished third out of 17 teams.
The Sewanhaka district wrestling team defeated Uniondale by a score of 37-27. It was a very tight match all the way through, but key wins by James Clark, Tito Sotolin and Ashraf Al-Abdullah helped secure the lead early in the match. Pins later in the match by Vinny Buscemi, Chuck Weiss and Gerard Daddino led the team to their third win of the season.
History was made at Carey when the Sewanhaka district wrestling team defeated Baldwin by a score of 39-22. This is the first time Nassau County powerhouse Baldwin has ever been beaten by the district team or by Carey teams of the past. It was a team effort of tough wrestling by Robert Sotolin, Massimo Giugliano, Matt Buonaspina, Chuck Weiss, Ashraf Al-Abdullah, Matt Daddino, Anthony Burdi and Gerard Daddino, that surprised Baldwin and led the team to victory. Congratulations to the team which enters the dual meet playoffs with a season record of 6-3.
