If you’ve been thinking about starting to run as a means to a healthier lifestyle, Nassau County has made it just a little bit easier for you to get started.
On June 25, Nassau County’s “Run Start” program, which is designed especially for those who have been meaning to try running but haven’t been sure how to get started, will kick things off with their first event at the Bethpage High School track. The program is being conducted by the Greater Long Island Running Club under the auspices of Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums.
Under the guidance of U.S. Track & Field Association certified coaches Deborah Blair, Ed Melnik and Bob Cook, beginners will be taken through a progressive 10-week program that will teach them how to get started. Coaches will also help train those who attend and teach them about proper nutrition, hydration, and the right footwear and apparel. Sports Injury Prevention specialst Dr. Steven Jonas will also teach how to best avoid an injury.
The Program will be conducted on a low key, no pressure, basis that will make everyone feel comfortable about getting started. The first session of the “Run Start” program will start at Bethpage High School on June 25, at 6:30 p.m. The program will run on ten consecutive Wednesday evenings throughout the Summertime, all leading up to the “Farmingdale Mile” on August 30.
