Seventh Inning Stretches

After rain forced a suspension of play last week, the Farmingdale State College Rams fell, 14-5, to top-seeded Cortland when the game was continued

In the top of the first, the Red Dragons (33-8) took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi which scored junior second baseman Mark DeMilio. A Max Rosing RBI single up the middle increased the advantage to 2-0, before Cortland added a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a balk to take a 4-0 lead.

The Red Dragons extended their lead to 5-0 in the third on a Rinaldi RBI single after senior third baseman Anthony Iacomini led off the inning with a triple.

In the top of the fifth, Cortland plated five more runs to open up a 10-0 advantage.

After the first three batters reached base for Farmingdale State (26-12) in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI groundout by junior third baseman Mike Scarlato put the Rams on the board. A Ryan Levine pinch-hit single to right scored Tom Rydzewski and Michael Marino to cut the deficit to 10-3. Senior first baseman Sal Sanquini and senior right fielder Edward Bergmann each added RBI singles to pull Farmingdale State within five, 10-5.

After the game was resumed in the seventh inning, the Red Dragons added a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to earn the 14-5 victory. The Rams were led by Rydzewski who was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Levine had one hit with a pair of RBI.

Rinaldi was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a game-high five runs batted in for Cortland. DeMilio had three hits, two runs and an RBI, while Rosing was 2-for-5 with a run and 3 RBI. Sophomore pitcher Brandon Serio earned the win after throwing six innings and allowing three
