Farmingdale’s PAL Flag Football kicked off another season at Woodward Parkway Field Sunday. The league gets bigger every year, as do the smiles on the faces of the young players running up and down the field. Here are some of the highlights as reported by coaches.
The Vikings’ exciting 19-12 win over the Broncos started with a Jack Macaluso pass to Nicky Demers who took it the length of the field for a TD. Demers followed it up with three scoring passes to Macaluso for an extra point and to both Jevon Evans and Matthew Widmer for long touchdown runs. Cody Nelson added a nice catch to keep the offense moving. The Vikings played outstanding team defense throughout the game and came up big on the last drive to preserve the win.
The Patriots beat the Chiefs 14-6 in a great defensive game. The contest was decided in the final minute with an interception by Daniel Almedina and a great running touchdown by Brett Cotov to seal the victory for the Patriots.
The Giants opened the new season with a 32 - 12 win over cross-town rival Jets. Jack Livingston (TD Pass), Tom Donovan (TD catch/pass), Tyler Moloney (2TDs) Sean Moloney (TD) and Mike Gulino (TD) provided the offense this week. Sean Ferris, Anthony LaRosa, Joe Schmidt and “Hollywood” Joe Dwyer kept a tough Jet squad in check on defense.
The Patriots came on strong against the Chiefs to win their first game with a score of 16 - 6. Tyler Timmons scored the first touchdown, with a 2-point conversion made between Nicholas Carbone and Matt Ragno. The next touchdown was made thanks to Nick Carbone throwing to Matt Ragno, and the 2-point conversion was scored by some awesome running from Thomas Weber. Randy Stefane, Anthony Barbuto, John Melfa, Chris Maddalone, and Brandon McGlynn should be proud of their great defensive play.
The Giants fought a tough Jets team to a 24 - 20 win on opening day. The two teams exchanged the lead all game long until Chris Moloney (4 TD passes) hit Paul DeSimone for the go ahead score late in second half. Vinny Rubino came up with 3 TD receptions to lead the offense and Matt McKenzie chipped in with some big first down catches. Mike Lynch and Marc Dittmeier had big INTs to stop Jet drives and set up scoring chances for the Giants and Brian Christmann came up with some big plays on “D.”
It was a huge day for Harrison Graf who hauled in 3 TD catches and a two-point conversion to lead the Broncos to a 34-30 victory over a tough Viking team. Harrison also threw a TD pass to Anthony Bonilla in this, the Broncos opening game of the 09 season. Anthony added a two-point conversion as well to his day. QB Liam Walsh had a great game throwing for 3 TDs and 4 extra points. On defense it was Joe DiLauro and Matt Lubliner who came up big. Joe ran back an interception for a score while Matt added two INT’s of his own to halt Viking drives. Chris Witt had 2 nice receptions while Kevin Aliventi also made a great catch. Nicky Mio and Alex Melton both played strong on both sides of the ball to help make this a successful day for the Broncos.
An undermanned Jets team rallied in the 2nd half to beat the Giants 27-20. Denis Donovan hit Vincent Mavaro with 4 TD passes while Billy Pickett, Paul Cohen and Brian Mazza also made key contributions on both sides of the ball.
The Vikings started the season with a well-earned 29-22 win against a tough Broncos team. There was tremendous effort from all the players with timely defensive contributions from Nico Rivera, Zach Pardo and Nick Panza. On offense, Alex Brosnan hit Dustin Feynman for six and Keith McNicholl for another score.
