Rams Enter 2014 With Big Win

The Farmingdale State women’s basketball team hosted non-conference opponent Medgar Evers (2-10) for their first game of the new year, claiming a 65-37 victory. The Rams improved to 3-4 overall with the win.

 

During the match, the Rams shot 62-percent from long range, knocking down 5 out of 8 three-point attempts, including three made by junior guard Christina Merrill of Levittown. Merrill finished with a team-high 14 points, while senior guard Nicky Young from

 

Queens, totaled 12 points, three assists and three steals. Junior guard Camille Romero also dished off six assists and Freshman forward Chelsea May from Baldwin totaled eight points and two rebounds.

 

Bethpage Students Receive Physical Education Awards

On Dec. 16, 2013, students Brianna Scaldaferri and Charles Bachmeier, from the Bethpage Union-Free School District, were honored for the Nassau County Outstanding Physical Education Student Award at the Crest Hollow Country Club. This award is presented to a student who exhibits a physically active lifestyle, demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior including good sportsmanship, character, civility and citizenship. Congratulations to both Brianna and Charlie.

Farmingdale Runners Score In Ho Ho Ho 5K Run

A record field of 1266 runners and walkers crossed the finish line on Saturday morning, Dec. 21, at the 26th annual Carter, DeLuca, Farrell & Schmidt Ho Ho Ho 5-kilometer run, which started and finished at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Bethpage.

 

Top finishers from Farmingdale were Joseph Hunt, who finished in 7th place overall and first in the 15-19 age group with a time of 17 minutes and 52 seconds; and Donna McMahon, who was the 6th woman finisher overall and first in the 40-44 age group with a time of 20 minutes, 6 seconds.

 

OTHG Raises $20k For A Farmingdale Child In Need

Players with the men’s 40 and up softball league, known as the Over the Hill Gang, recently presented a check for $20,000 in support of a child from Farmingdale who was born with a rare liver disease. The recipient of this year’s fundraiser, Ellieanna Barters, has endured several procedures, including a liver transplant and is now suffering from a rare post-transplant disease which requires expensive treatments. 

 

Lacrosse Coach Hartranft Wins Gerald J. Carroll Award

The Farmingdale School District recently announced that  Farmingdale High School boys’ varsity lacrosse coach Bob Hartranft has been selected to receive the prestigious 2013 Gerald J. Carroll Award, presented by US Lacrosse.  The award recognizes one high school coach whose success is best measured in the support and guidance given to the development of student-athletes.  Coach Hartranft will be presented the award during the 2014 US Lacrosse Convention scheduled on January 10-12, 2014 in Philadelphia, PA.

 

ECAC Division III Metro All-Stars Named

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2013 Division III Metro Men’s Soccer All-Stars on Thursday, December 12th. Senior goalkeeper Angelo Viteritti and sophomore midfielder Victor Romero were named Second Team All-Stars.

 

Baseball Star Signs Letter of Intent

Bethpage High School senior Francisco Almanzar signed a National Letter of Intent on Nov. 14 to play Division II baseball for Dominican College in the fall, where he was accepted on early admission. The catcher for the Bethpage varsity baseball team received not only an athletic scholarship, but an academic scholarship as well. The combined scholarships will cover most of his tuition.

 

Francisco was joined at the signing by Coach Fischer, Principal Michael Spence, Athletic Director John Franchi, his parents Elizabeth and Javier, and his brother Miguel, a freshman who also plays baseball for Bethpage.

13 Dalers Sign Letters of Intent

Thirteen male and female student-athletes at Farmingdale High School have signed scholarship letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at prestigious schools around the county. During the “College signing day” ceremony, on Dec. 5, friends, families, faculty, academic advisors, coaches, and parents joined student athletes in support of their collegiate careers.

Farmingdale Runner Finishes Third

Franklin Diaz of Farmingdale scored as the third overall finisher in the 21st annual Rob’s Run—a 5-kilometer cross-country style race through Stillwell Woods in Woodbury, hosted by New York Blood Services,

Diaz finished with a total time of 16 minutes and 43 seconds. 

 

After finishing the race, on Dec. 1, Franklin went back out onto the course to run with his nephew Anthony Diaz, who was celebrating his 10th birthday. Anthony finished the run with a total time of 29 minutes and 37 seconds. 

534 competitors finished this year’s run which was put together by the Greater Long Island Running Club, in memorium of Rob Lauterborn. 

 

 

Dalers Denied Once Again

The Farmingdale Dalers took on the Sachem North Flaming Arrows last Saturday afternoon at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium for the Long Island Conference I Championship in front of 7,200 fans. This was the Dalers second trip to the finals since losing to Floyd last year. The Dalers went into the game looking to finish a perfect season.
