Over The Hill Gang Softball Report: August 21, 2009

Friday, 21 August 2009 00:00

Mers Pub got off to a real slow start this season going 1-3-1 in the first five games, however they have turned it around late in the season winning their last three games to run their record to 7-6-1. The last two wins were dominating victories with a combined score of 50-6. After blowing out O’Shea’s Pub two weeks ago 23-1, the Mers Men smoked an understaffed Barco Construction team 27-5 in eight innings. Mers was just solid and domineering right from the get-go. The infield play from George Cohan, Joe Girimonte, Al Vasquez, Tom Vella, Joe Fanning, and the always-solid first base play of Jim Filecccia was outstanding and turned a number of nice double plays.

Friday, 07 August 2009 00:00
The 11U Greendogs led by manager Glenn Rice won the July 4 tournament at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank. After losing game 1 to the SYAG Braves the boys put on a hitting and pitching display winning the next three games to reach the semifinals, two of those wins were by shutouts. In the semifinals, the ‘Dogs crushed the Dix Hills Dodgers and then got their shot at revenge when they had to meet the tough SYAG Braves in the finals. The Greendogs stayed hot, after being tied 3-3 going into the third inning, the Dogs scored nine runs, most of them with two outs to take a 12-3 lead.

The Braves gave a little bit of a scare in the last inning but the Greendogs held on for a 12-8 win and taking home the title. Coach Rice would like to thank the boys for a great tournament and to Coaches Fred and Matt, as well as the parents for their support all weekend.

Over The Hill Gang Softball Report

Friday, 31 July 2009 00:00

On Friday night against a tough Bar Boy squad, Barco again found a way to win; this victory was due to their solid defensive play in earning their 9-5 “W”. Barco held their opponent to 7 runs or less for the third week in a row in winning their 6th straight, improving their record to 10-2. Early in the game Dennis “Gimpy Grandpa” Ryan made a sterling sliding catch setting the tone for a defensive battle between both teams. Barco has been strong up the middle defensively all season and was evident this night as exemplified by Dave Saur’s fine running catch in R/C along with the combination of Russ Graham (SS), Steve Jacobson (2b) and Gary Jambor (P) turning 5 DPs, preventing Bar Boy from mounting any rallies early on and keeping them off the board till the seventh. By then Barco had built a 6-0 lead, scoring in the 1st on Dave Saur’s 2 run double after Dave Ringer’s RBI single and again in the 4th when Bob Diamond and Jim Hose came through with clutch two outs RBI hits to increase Barco’s lead. Bar Boy finally scored, placing two in the 7th, but Barco responded immediately with three more in the 8th on Bob Bergsten’s double and Terry McPartland’s clutch two out single. That provided Barco a needed cushion as Bar Boy added three in the bottom half cutting Barco’s lead to 9-5 heading into the ninth. Fortunately Barco was able to get out of a bases loaded situation without giving up a run to secure another closely contested game. As a footnote to Barco’s win, to the amazement of many, the ball bucket survived for yet another week. It seems Steve Jacobson immediately went into shock after taking a called 3rd strike and didn’t come out of his daze until he was revived on the bench (given a whiff of smelling salts). The team knew something was amiss immediately when he walked back to the bench and calmly sat down.

Autocraft jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never let up beating Changing Times Pub 21-3. Denny “Ace” Oehl pitched a great game, keeping CT off the bases for most of the game. Autocraft used both the small game and the big game this time with a barrage of hits from Dave Rubino, Joe “Mr. Steady” Lutz, Tommy Vanasco, and Brian Landy. The power came as home runs by John Garrity, Bob Huebner, and a bomb by Benny Macchia that landed somewhere near the 12th hole at the Bethpage Black.
