Dalers Swimming Finishes Strong

Written by Coach Ken Ilchuk Friday, 22 February 2013 00:00

During the course of the season you have some good nights, and then you have nights like Monday, Feb. 11. The Dalers finished 4th out of 24 teams at the Nassau County Swimming and Diving Championships at Eisenhower Park, marking their best county finish since 2007 and a jump of five spots from last year’s championship. In the course of the night, 24 of the team’s 31 total swims were either personal or season best performances, including two new school records (five of the school’s 13 records were eclipsed this season).

Farmingdale finished behind Garden City, Great Neck South, and Jericho, defeating perennial powerhouse Long Beach by one point for the 4th spot. That victory marks the first time in 23 years that the Dalers have defeated Long Beach in boys swimming.

Farmingdale was also named the winner of the 2013 Sportsmanship Award given annually by the Long Island Swimming Officials Association. This is the 6th time in the last 10 years that the Dalers have been so honored (the girls have also won the award twice in that span). The award is in recognition of not only the athletes and coaches, but of the parents.

Ferraros Bring Elite Hockey To Eisenhower Park

World-class sports facility coming to Nassau County

Call it a coincidence, but the timing for Chris and Peter Ferraro’s announcement of the creation of a new hockey and recreation facility couldn’t be any better.

Two days before the National Hockey League was set to drop the puck for a shortened, 48-game season beginning on Jan. 19, the Ferraro twins – former NHL players and Olympians themselves – broke ground on their $15 million, privately financed Twin Rinks Ice Center at Eisenhower Park.

“It is our passion to support Long Island families so that they will no longer have to be torn apart or have their family life disrupted just because a child excels in hockey and wants to try to make it to the NHL,” said Chris Ferraro. “This facility will enable us to create a hockey hot bed right here on Long Island.”

Local skaters celebrate

National Skating Month

While each family celebrates the new year in their own way, skating enthusiasts and members of United States Figure Skating (USFS) have their own tradition: kicking off the year with a National Skating Month event at their local rink.

Throughout January, skating clubs across the country celebrate the sport by hosting a myriad of skating-themed activities to create a fun-filled afternoon, or in this case, morning. On Sunday, January 13th, Great Neck Figure Skating Club (GNFSC) kept over 120 skaters and their families entertained during two hours of festivities.
