(Editor’s note: This letter to the editor is in response to the From Long Island WINS column by Maryann Sinclair Slutsky that appeared in the Friday, Jan. 21 edition of the Farmingdale Observer titled “In Wake of Arizona, a Call for Civility”.)
It didn’t take Long Island WINS Campaign Director, Maryann Sinclair Slutsky long to use the senseless and tragic shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords by a crazed mentally defective 22-year-old, to get on her pulpit to criticize all Long Islanders for not being more understanding of the plight of the illegal immigrants here on Long Island. I think Long Island WINS has reached a new despicable low by using the Arizona tragedy, and actually equating it to the murder of illegal immigrant Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue in the fall of 2008.
Ms. Slutsky implies that both tragedies “took place in a similar climate of increased hated,” and “against immigrants, creating an environment where dehumanizing our fellow Long Islanders became a norm instead of an exception.” Is she kidding? Long Islanders are somehow in part, at fault for the events in Arizona, and (we) spew hatred on a daily basis here on Long Island? Is this WINS call for civility and talking that heals? I think not, and I am angered and insulted by her allegations that the citizens of Long Island spew hatred on a daily basis. What fantasy world does she reside?
The immigration rules and laws on the books in these United States, and yes, even Long Island, say illegal immigrants, undocumented aliens, or whatever politically altered definition you wish to give them, who are living within the borders of the United States without proper authorization or documentation, are here illegally, and are breaking the law. This simple premise falls within Ms. Slutsky’s call for more civil discourse. So let’s have at it then.
To clarify my position even simpler, Long Island WINS’ campaign calls for the flaunting of, and the outright contempt for, the immigration laws of the United States, as if they are irrelevant and have no standing, in favor or their own views, which are clearly contradictory to the basic fundamentals of law and order. I, like many others do not, and will not, remain silent when groups like Long Island WINS, condones, supports, or encourages anything, but actual compliance with the laws of the land.
“Let’s give respect and dignity a chance,” is how Ms. Slutsky ends her monthly propaganda publication. Yes, I agree. Let’s also include, all aspects of being a law-abiding member of society, and respect for our laws. Long Islanders should not remain silent on this issue any longer. Her comments and statements are indecent, uncivilized, and blatantly untrue. If you disagree with WINS’ beliefs and publications, then speak out against organizations like WINS, as they are clearly becoming more desperate in finding support of illegal immigrants. WINS Campaign Director Maryann Sinclair Slutsky’s latest article, seeking a call for civility, should clearly practice what she’s preaching.
