This Monday, March 30 I will be hosting a workshop at the Farmingdale Public Library entitled Foreclosure & Financial Literacy Workshop. This free workshop will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to all members of the public. The meeting will educate residents on basic financial literacy as well as provide those who may be in need of financial assistance or counseling with available resources.
A strong and vibrant middle class is the backbone of our local and national economy. Many residents have heard about help for financially distressed families but are not sure who to speak to, if they qualify, or when these programs will become available. Working closely with guest speakers from the Nassau County Office of Housing, Sperry Credit Union and the New York State Attorney General's Office residents will be made aware of programs and resources available to guide them through these tough times.
We are in the midst of the greatest financial downturn since the great depression. New York State and Nassau County in particular have been hit especially hard. Local governments are seeing dwindling revenues and budget gaps as a result of this economic crisis. We have been forced to make tough decisions in recent months, working closely with our labor unions and department heads to cut spending and expenses. Residents in the county have had similar challenges, being forced to reduce weekly and monthly expenses and eliminate spending where not absolutely necessary. Foreclosures and homeowners in arrears on mortgage payments have risen sharply over the past year.
Our grandparents and parents faced similar challenges during their lifetime. This is not a problem in another state or another community; it is our neighbors and our families who are facing enormous stress every day. Through workshops and programs like these I hope that we can relieve some of the pressures facing families in Nassau County and work to restore financial stability and fiscal responsibility here in our community. My office is always available to you. If you are dealing with financial difficulty and are unable to attend this meeting please contact my office at 571-6214 to find out how we can help you.
