I am relieved that Governor David Paterson has listened to the people he serves and decided to rescind the harmful taxes on recreation and entertainment that he originally proposed. The irony of this action is that Governor Paterson is taking credit for fixing a problem that he created.

I have consistently rejected Governor Paterson's job-killing tax increases because they hurt our families, our businesses and our economy. While Governor Paterson, along with his Democratic colleagues in the Assembly and the Senate, have repeatedly looked to fix the state's economic issues by taxing those in the suburbs, I am calling for a plan that taxes less, spends less and helps create jobs.

While Governor Paterson's rejection of these tax increases is good news, his change of heart was announced after weeks of public pressure and outrage, and at a time when his job approval rating has dropped dramatically in the latest polls. Now, the governor has more work to do, and he needs to deliver for our state without relying solely on federal bailout money.

Although Governor Paterson has eliminated $1.3 billion in new taxes and fees, let's not forget what is still included in his budget. His budget still includes the elimination of $1.7 billion in property tax rebates to the hardworking middle class families of this state. Additionally, there are still almost $5 billion more in taxes on businesses and individuals which can only make our economic condition worse.

At the same time, the Democrats from New York City are actively pursuing a payroll tax at our expense to bankroll the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Their alternative plan is to raise or create new tolls on bridges, once again impacting the suburbs surrounding NYC. Our state deserves better.

I will continue fighting for hardworking taxpayers throughout our community by pursuing a final budget that taxes less, spends less and helps strengthen our economy and creates new jobs.

Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.

State Senator
