Imagine seeing numerous kite boards and colorful parachutes leaping into the sky performing their acrobatic stunts to the amazement of an expected 3,000 children and families. This kite boarding air show by Best Kiteboards is just one of the many terrific activities and displays that fill the day at the Jones Beach West End Boat Basin.
This area has a beautiful view of the Great South Bay, the Jones Inlet and Meadowbrook Bridge. Photo opportunities and interviews abound as Long Islanders are introduced to kayaking, snapper fishing, and race boats, including one of the National Power Boat Association's champions. There will be activities and exhibits of interest to all ages. According to the International Game Fish Association, women are the fastest growing group of fly fishing enthusiasts in the nation. These newcomers to the sport, and experienced and prospective anglers, will have the opportunity to learn from professionals in fly fishing, surf casting, and fly tying.
Nature walks, touch tanks, aquariums, displays and exhibits provide children and all Long Islanders with hands-on learning and a chance to experience Long Island's fascinating sea life. Farmingdale's Merritt Bakery will create the largest fish-shaped cake in the state and perhaps the nation. Last year's cake was a fourteen-foot, Fluke fish-shaped cake. The Department of Environmental Conservation and BOCES as well as other organizations will provide a plethora of environmental education programs to teach conservation, environmental protection, seawater composition, and ground water aquifer percolation. Solar equipment manufacturers will exhibit the latest high-tech renewable energy technologies as well.
Live music will round out the day with a premier Long Island original band The Trees, and bluegrass and country sensation Tornado Alley, who both regularly perform at Long Island's popular clubs and restaurants.
Remember, safety first is a must. This event provides the opportunity for parents to teach their children the basics in water and boat safety. There will be information for CPR training, swimming lessons, boat licensing, as well as helpful safety tips and instruction provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, American Red Cross and scores of others.
Hope to see you all there.
