Have you ever wanted to see Long Island in the 1800s? Have you ever wondered how Long Islanders lived before the MTA, Levittown or even the Civil War? The Old Bethpage Village Restoration provides a look back at 19th century Long Island in an exciting atmosphere that captures the imaginations of kids and adults alike. Beginning in 1963, this momentous undertaking has gone through painstaking measures to save and house over 50 historic structures from across Long Island. Also included within its expansive two hundred acre site are seven reconstructed buildings and a costumed staff dedicated to authenticity. Open Wednesday through Sunday, the Old Bethpage Village is a must see for both curious Long Islanders and parents looking for an educational, kid friendly atmosphere.
Visitors can tour the "Layton General Store," the "District #6 Schoolhouse" or the "Powell Farm," complete with livestock. Each exhibit is brimming with historical relics, many of which are original to each building. Yet, this living museum also hosts activities aimed at engaging visitors. Some examples are various craft demonstrations, full military reenactments and old time baseball games. Visitors can also partake in 19th century style penny candy, pretzels and root beer while listening to historic music. Furthermore, summer programs for children and special events cater to a child's sense of excitement and love of learning. On June 29, July 26 and Aug. 10, the Old Bethpage Village will present traditional 19th century dancing and music between 1:30 and 4 p.m.
Each Sunday in August the Village will present old fashioned base ball games using equipment of that era and adhering to 1884 rules. The Glen Head Zig Zags will be matched against the New York Mutuals in a special Fourth of July game. The highlight of the summer, an old fashioned parade will be held alongside the base ball game, celebrating the return of Union soldiers to Long Island. This event includes music by the Old Bethpage Village Brass Band, patriotic speeches and musket firing by Civil War reenactors.
A new addition this year, every Tuesday during the months of July and August, the restoration site is hosting a drive-in movie theater that begins at dusk. The movie listings are as follows: July 1: Transformers, July 8: Men in Black, July 15: Disturbia, July 22: Rocky Balboa, July 29: Talladega Nights, Aug. 5: The Mummy, Aug. 12: Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, Aug. 19: Hairspray and Aug. 26: Terminator 2.
With both summer recess and the warm weather months approaching, the Old Bethpage Village Restoration provides a fun, educational experience right here on Long Island. I highly recommend it as a must see attraction in Nassau County.
