I have heard many issues over the past years concerning the building of the Stop & Shop at the Liberty Site. Traffic, noise, congestion and pollution are all valid concerns. I feel the biggest issue concerning the building of this huge supermarket has been overlooked. This concern being the safety of our children. I cannot think of a more irresponsible place to build a giant supermarket than right next to Farmingdaleís largest park. Hundreds of kids cross Motor Avenue every day either walking or riding bikes to attend activities at Allen Park. Motor Avenue is a danger for kids as it exists now with cars averaging 40 to 50 mph the only stopping point is the traffic light at the entrance of the park and we all know how children listen to parents about safely crossing the street.
If the Stop & Shop is built, Motor Avenue will now have thousands of Stop & Shop customers, tractor trailer deliveries and hundreds of private delivery trucks added to its already heavy traffic load every day. I coached soccer at Allen Park for years. The busiest time at Allen Park is on the weekends, which is exactly when most people do their supermarket shopping. On most weekends, the parking lot at Allen Park gets full and people have to park on the street. This combination creates an extremely unsafe condition for the children of Farmingdale as it will every single day of the week. Also, with the eventual expansion of Allen Park, even more children will be gathering there.
I ask Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto and the rest of the Oyster Bay Town Board to please choose our childrenís safety over the building of a giant supermarket. There are so many other things that can be built which would be a much better fit for the surrounding neighborhood. I also ask that concerned parents of Farmingdale write to Supervisor Venditto and voice their concerns. Our children need Allen Park to be a safe place to visit.
