On Tuesday, April 8, residents will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed Farmingdale Library budget.

The total tax levy amount for the 2008-09 year is $3,426,020, which represents a $61,350, or 1.82 percent increase over the previous year.

Library taxes are based on the assessed value of your property multiplied by the library tax rate. All single-family houses in the Farmingdale Library District have the same library tax rate of 19.52.

The following are sample properties within the Farmingdale Library District that were posted on the library's website:

• Sample property: Incorporated Village - Old Style House with Porch

Assessed Value = $1,060

Tax rate per $100 of Assessed Value = 19.52

2006-07 Library taxes = $207 or 57 cents per day.

• South Farmingdale - Cape

Assessed Value = $1,003

Tax rate per $100 of Assessed Value = 19.52

2006-07 Library taxes = $196 or 54 cents per day.

• N. Massapequa - Split/Ranch

Assessed Value = $1,144

Tax rate per $100 of Assessed Value = 19.52

2005-06 Library taxes = $223 or 61 cents per day.

Library Director Debbie Podolski said an increase in interest in online reference materials and books-on-tape and downloadable titles are the reason there is a reduction in the adult book budget and increase in audio/visual materials.

"We also will be continuing our memberships with local museums," she added. "Patrons can visit the Long Island Children's Museum, Vanderbilt Museum and the Old Westbury Gardens by borrowing the library's museum passes which will give them free admission."

The budget also shows an increase in programs for adults, including bus trips, exercise programs, and musical performances.

"We are creating a teen area and offering more programs for teens and children," Podolski said. "We will be installing additional public access computers for adults and replacing the computers in the children's library. All this while maintaining the library facilities, paying utility bills, salaries and benefits."

Incumbent Trustee Rosemary Trudden's position is up for re-election and is running unopposed.

The budget vote and trustee election will be held on Tuesday, April 8 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the library. For more information on the budget visit the Farmingdale Public Library at 116 Merritts Road in Farmingdale, log on to www.farmingdalelibrary.org or call 249-9090.
