Roller hockey is becoming a highly competitive sport with many travel organizations and high school leagues. The NCRHA, the national collegiate roller hockey association, recognizes the sport and a growing number of colleges are adding roller hockey clubs around the country. Under the NCRHA, there are Divisions I, II, III, for a four-year college and a B Division for community colleges across the country.

The Farmingdale community is represented in the sport under the direction of head coach Jim Gunn and assistant coach Gabe Vitale. This JV team participates in the Island-wide Roller Hockey League. This league has a varsity, junior varsity, and a junior freshman division. The high school teams constantly play crossover games against higher seeds. Such an opportunity continues to elevate the level of play.

Head Coach Jim Gunn is well known to the sport. Growing up in a family of hockey players and coaches, he continued the legacy first, by playing ice hockey for Sachem High School. Then he participated in many ice and roller hockey leagues as an adult. Under the sponsorship of the NY Rangers, he coached ice hockey in Harlem for 13 years. Presently, Jim directs and coaches the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club ice hockey program. Through all his experience and knowledge, he goes back to the basics, first teaching the fundamentals of the sport. He believes that what is done in practice will transfer into the game situation. Respect, hard work, and unselfish play are some of the many life lessons the coaches are relaying to the players.

The turning point for the team was the cross over game against North Babylon High School. After that execution of improved play, the team continued with extensive practices. These focused on drill work, skating skills, outlet passing, and defensive techniques. The coaches are instructing on different strategies for offensive scoring and power play situations.

They recently won against the John F. Kennedy High School Cougars 6-3 to start the second half of the season. Leading the scoring was Daniel Hirt with four goals. John Gunn had two assists and Danny Kane had one assist on Hirt's goals. Steven Jones scored off a pass by Nicholas Vitale. Andrew Cappadona scored right from the face off. Ron Faithful was in goal shutting down many scoring attempts by the Cougars. A total team effort led to the win. This start to the second half of the season earned them a tie for first place in the Silver Division with a combined record of 5-6. They have nine games left, then playoffs.
