Valedictorian of Port Washington (now Schreiber) High School in 1931, Frances graduated from Adelphi University in 1937 including a year at l'Universite de Grenoble in France.
Her European travels were cut short by Nazi threats to France preceding WWII. She taught mathematics at the Buckley School in Roslyn. When the U.S. entered the war, she designed instruments for Sperry Gyroscope Corporation, then of Lake Success. She retired from Sperry in 1958 and promptly retrained herself for a second career as a computer program writer for the County of Nassau until a second retirement in the 1980s. Also in 1958, Frances married the late Alfred S. Carter and moved from Port Washington to Farmingdale, to be near her late brother and sister- in-law, "Buzz" and Irma Thomas. The Carters resided there until Frances became physically and mentally disabled from hip surgery and required institutional assistance. They had no children. She is survived by her nephew Richard S. Thomas of New Canaan, CT.
Frances sung in the choirs of both St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Port Washington and St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Farmingdale. Frances and Al maintained a private plane at Republic Airport in which they traveled all over the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Their plane was noted in local newspapers as it was hit by a car which ran out of control on New Highway. Both Carters were active in many local charities as well.
Frances and Al both willed their remains to medical schools for research. Arrangements were made by Arthur F. White Funeral Home. Accordingly there will be no funeral; however, a memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Consolation on Jan. 11 at 10:30 a.m. and in the spring another will be held at St. Thomas' Church.
