Eighth Squad Detectives from the Nassau County Police Department reported the arrest of a Farmingdale man for criminal mischief that occurred in Farmingdale on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 12:30 a.m.
Detectives report that Thomas Dauphin, 26, of Farmingdale fired several eight to 12-inch wire projectiles from a homemade propane gas charged weapon at a telephone pole located at Main Street and Pleasant Avenue, striking and loading into the pole, service panel and fiber optic wires.
According to detectives, Long Island Fire Exchange suffered damage to their fiber optic wires estimated at over $10,000 and caused the Saltzman East Memorial School in Farmingdale to lose access to their school-wide network. Police report that Verizon also suffered an estimated $7,000 in damage to their Verizon Fios fiber optic wires. Additionally, six stray shots were fired into a neighbor's front and side yard, causing damage to a holiday ornament, police stated.
Dauphin is being charged with two counts of Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon 4th Degree and was arraigned on Thursday, Dec. 13 in First District Court.
