The South Farmingdale Fire Department elections will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 11 and from 4 to 9 p.m. at the South Farmingdale Fire Headquarters, located at 819 South Main St. in Farmingdale.
Fire commissioners hold five-year terms. All registered voters of the South Farmingdale Fire Districts are eligible to vote for these positions. Fire commissioner is a non-salaried position.
Three candidates are vying for one fire commissionER position. Incumbent Richard Bylicki is running against Alan Jacoby and Anthony Magnifico. The candidates' profiles are below in alphabetical order.
A Farmingdale resident since 1976, Rick Bylicki has been involved with the South Farmingdale Fire Department for 30 years. Currently an inactive member, he previously served as chief of department. Bylicki has been a fire commissioner for the past 11-and-a-half years and said he is running for re-election because of the recent progress in the department.
"In the past few years we were able to rebuild two firehouses," he added. "This year we had a zero percent increase in fire taxes."
Bylicki said his future goals for the department include maintaining training and fire apparatus.
"We have to budget and watch every penny we spend," he added.
Bylicki is a retired commissioner from the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management and also a retired NYPD sergeant.
Alan Jacoby grew up in South Farmingdale and has been back living there for the past two years. While he is not a member of the South Farmingdale Fire Department, Jacoby said he has 11 years of fire service experience including being an ex-captain for the Uniondale Fire Department and former member of the Hempstead Fire Department.
"I ran for Uniondale fire commissioner when I was 18 years old and I came in second," Jacoby said.
Jacoby said his goal for the department is "membership support and to basically provide them with the equipment and training they need to be a proactive and progressive fire department."
He said is also running because he wants to "give back to the community."
Jacoby is a self-employed business owner.
Lifelong South Farmingdale resident Anthony Magnifico is a charter member of the South Farmingdale Fire Department. He has been involved in all but 12 years of the department's 46-year history.
His first time running for fire commissioner, Magnifico said he is running partly because he is no longer allowed to answer fire calls.
"I felt some of my insights from being a fireman and resident of South Farmingdale could help reduce taxes of the people in South Farmingdale," he added. "I would definitely be looking to make sure that the equipment was the safest. The firemen's training is beneficial and makes them better firefighters."
A Navy veteran, Magnifico is currently an account executive for printing firm.
