The holiday lighting of the Village of Farmingdale's Tricentennial Tree, a local tradition since 1989, will take place Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 6 p.m. on the Village Green, adjacent to Village Hall. Mayor George J. Graf will "do the honors" of illuminating the tree, following a countdown by an enthusiastic group of young residents. The Junior Chorus of Woodward Parkway School, under the direction of Debra Lutz, and the South Shore Brass Ensemble will provide seasonal music. The brass ensemble has played at all the tree-lighting programs throughout the years as a holiday gift to the community from the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce. Brad DeMilo, founding director of the Farmingdale Village Pops, will "emcee" the program. The annual event is an outgrowth of Farmingdale's Tricentennial of Settlement celebration in 1987. A Colorado blue spruce tree was planted on the grounds of the Village Green as a continuing symbol of the yearlong commemoration. In addition to the Village of Farmingdale, sponsors of the program include the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society, the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, and the Kiwanis Club of Farmingdale. Refreshments will be served in Village Hall immediately after the program courtesy of the Kiwanis Club. The sponsors invite Farmingdale residents to be part of this traditional event which heralds the holiday season and recalls the settlement of our community 320 years ago.
