The recent recall of millions of hazardous toys from major manufacturers has worried many parents. It is very difficult and confusing for them to find information about the items and ways to protect their children. Most of the recalled toys were made in China and contain dangerous levels of lead and/or have small pieces that can pose choking hazards for young children. I recently received an e mail from New York State Senator Charles Fuschillo, Jr. that provides some important web sites links where you can learn more about the recalls and ways to safeguard your children. You can obtain these important links by visiting his web site at www.senatorfuschillo.com and clicking on "Protect Children From Hazardous Toys". You then will be able to click on the various sites that can help educate you on the products and specific hazards associated with them. The first site that appears is the NY State Department of Health (www.health.state.ny.us). This site shows the photos of many of the recalled toys and can give you a better idea of what they look like. It also provides you with information on the dangers and symptoms of lead poisoning, whether your child should get a blood lead test and detailed information on the recalled toys. The next site is the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.gov). This site not only will provide you more information but will also give you other safety tips and non-toy related recalls. You can also reach them at 800-638-2772. While on this site you can register to receive free email alerts about future product recalls. You can also go directly to Mattel and Fisher Price at www.matel.com/safety for information directly from the "manufacturer" and link to their Consumer Relations Answer Center (www.service.mattel.com). Another valuable resource is the New York State Consumer Protection Board hotline at 1-800-697-1220. Here you can obtain more information about how to protect your children. Any parent with small children should take the time to visit these sites and learn more about the hazards and how to protect your children from harm. I want to thank Senator Fuschillo for compiling this very useful information.
