After Nicole Gahan explained the mission of the C.J. Rovin Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated toward easing the burden of family members suffering from cancer, the Columbus Lodge Golden Lions saw no alternative but to become committed to the foundation's annual softball fundraising event on Sept. 15. The foundation was established by the friends and family of Cory Jill Rovin, a young woman whose life was taken by cancer eight years ago.

"After speaking with Nicole (Gahan) I could hear the dedication of the Foundation's mission in her voice," said Ed Bochynski. "I immediately committed the men and women that make up the Golden Lions. We will be there to support her event and the mission."
According to Ms. Gahan, the fund-raining softball tournament is sold out. All teams must have a minimum of ten people. And since this is a modified co-ed event, a minimum of four women are required on the field at all times. Gahan also explained, "Since this is for fun and a good cause all teams are encouraged to bring their own barbeque fixings and enjoy the facilities at Shell Creek Park (in Island Park)."
In addition to the Columbus Lodge, Nick's (Siozio) Bombers have committed to the event. The Bombers and the Golden Lions last faced each other in the championship game at the McDonald's Sports Festival in 2003. The game ended in controversy when it was abruptly ended after four innings to accommodate a celebrity team that was waiting to play against the winning team. The abbreviated game left the Golden Lions on the short end.
Returning to the Golden Lions lineup will be Jackie Pasquerella, who recently completed her commitment with the New England Riptide. The former all-American from Villanova is looking forward to rejoining the Lions for her third season. Allison Rogers, Kathy Mundy, Kim Davis, and Julie Janus are all expected to see playing time. The Lions big guns of Dave Saviano, Jeff Steinberg, Jamie Campos and Dennis Tranchina have also committed.
Now in their eleventh season, the Golden Lions' participation in fund raising softball events has raised over $741,000. The team is affiliated with the Columbus Lodge #2143, a not for profit fraternal organization and member of the Order Sons of Italy in America. The Lodge offers its members various social and recreational activities, as well as community and charity involvement. For more information one may contact Gary Caparco at 799-2613.
