Moby Drugs beat Bethpage Physical Therapy 20-7 in one of Friday night's early games. Moby's bats were on fire, pounding out 29 hits including home runs by Andy Sullivan, John Cafarella and Paul Nardone.
The Synergy bats really woke up against M&T, beating them 30-10 on a night that saw awesome power come alive. Hitting round-trippers were Benny Macchia (grand slam) and Joe "Mr. Steady" Lutz who hit two. Tommy Vanasco ran two homers into triples. Also with big nights at the plate were Aldo Balducci, Bruce Coonan, Bob Huebner, Dennis Oehl, and Richie Dargie. Showing why he is nicknamed "Ace" was Denny Oehl on the mound, who kept M&T from mounting an attack. Defensively, Aldo Balducci stepped into the shortstop role in great style, and Benny Macchia and Bob Huebner caught everything humanly possible in the outfield.
A very impressive come-from-behind win for Built-More Builders as they beat Mers Pub 13-11. Tom Dittmeier returned from Cooperstown with some Hall of Fame play of his own, belting a long RBI double in the first, one of three hits he had on the night. Mers took the lead in the third and held it until the final inning. Down five runs, BMB rallied for seven with most of the hits coming after two outs were made. Pete Mendelson, Joe Cipolla, Jerry Mazza, Richie D'Amico, Tom "T" Ball, Tom Dittmeier, Marc Fischer, John DeFalco and Joe Manning had hits in the inning. The biggest blow came off the bat of Joe "sneakers" Manning, his second game winning hit in the past three games. When it was over, T-ball had four hits, Jerry Mazza, Karl Dessel and Marc Fischer had three hits each. And pitcher Kris Solberg held a very potent Mers lineup to only 11 runs. BMB notes: Congratulations to young Matt Dittmeier, young Brian Tinney and the rest of their Farmingdale baseball team after a very strong showing in Cooperstown last week. And best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Ira Berger's wife, Sharon.
Granny O'Sheas came ready to play Bar Boy as their roster filled up with people back from vacation. The game was relatively quiet through the third inning as Grannys posted a 3-1 lead. The fourth and fifth innings had O'Sheas break it open and take control with 12 runs scored. Brian "The Basher" Mulcahy smoked another three-run home run into
centerfield that got the fourth inning rally going. Jay "Downtown" Donovan also continued hitting the long ball with an RBI triple and an additional RBI single. O'Sheas depended on the whole team as RBIs were credited to Gary Innes, Dave Aitchison, Mike Hadnagy, Lenny Balestrieri, Bob Kirk, Don Carlin, Bob Thompson and Walter Hasemann. Bob Myers had a well pitched game (and an RBI walk) as Grannys went on to win 18-1
O'Sheas record now stands at 9-3 for the year.
Friday's late game between Singleton's and Changing Times started out on a good note for C.T. as they scored three runs in the first, but by the bottom of the third inning they found themselves in a large hole trailing 27-3. A change of pitchers helped somewhat, but over the next three innings Big Red still outscored the Men in Grey by a 13-4 margin, and ended up with a 40-7 victory, in six innings due to time constraints, for their eighth win of the year. Leading the way once again was Gary Saccaro with another 5-5 night (H.R), John Gannon and Paul Canalattos each with four hits including a homer with Tom (Satch) Camarda,Tom Callahan, Rich Cirillo, Larry Grieshaber, Al Veneziano, Benny Alberto, Alan Rapfogel (homerun) and Richie Smindak ( H.R) all smashing three hits each.
Barco's inconsistent play reared its ugly head again in their loss to Hampton Air, losing 12-9. Barco jumped out with four runs in the first on RBI hits by Kevin Moloney, Dave Ringer (two) and Steve Schwind before the rally died. Hampton scored five in the second to go up 5-4 but Barco tied it on Kevin Moloney's sac fly in the third. Unfortunately Barco's bats fell silent till Terry McPartland smoked a solo HR in the seventh, by that time Air was up by five runs. Barco did make it interesting by scoring three in the ninth on Gary Jambor's fourth hit of the night and Terry McPartland's two RBI single but they couldn't muster enough to take the lead. The loss dropped Barco's record to 6-4-1. As a side note, there are times when in the heat of the game players say things spontaneously, but Terry McPartland was wondering what Gary Jambor was thinking when he yelled "stop lollygagging" during a play. At least it gave Terry some comic relief.
OTHG President Jim Reilly would like to extend a well-deserved "Thank You" to Barco's Anne Jambor, Tina Diamond and Debbie White who came to Jim's rescue in putting together the league's charity chance books Friday night in time so they could be distributed.
Reminder to all players: please return your raffle tickets and money to your manager ASAP. The big charity event is Friday, Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Allen Park. All are invited for a night of fun as the Farmingdale community comes together for a child in need. For more information about the fund-raiser, go to www.othgny.com and click on latest news.
