Built-More Builders beat a tough Moby Drugs team, 24-15 on Friday. The evening began with "Bino" Reverberi giving one of his pre-game pep talks, but the difference this time was that it actually worked. Funny thing though, Tom Dittmeier missed the speech, but arrived in time to blast a fence clearing grand slam in the first inning. Tom didn't stop there, adding a triple and a double to finish the night with 7 RBI. Tom "T" Ball was another big hitter for BMB going 4-4 and scoring 3 runs. "Bino" Reverberi, Tyrone Clark, Pete Mendelson, Kris Solberg and Jerry Mazza all had 3 hits each as BMB pounded out 31 on the night. Defensively, Tom Dittmeier had a sliding catch in centerfield, while "Bino" Reverberi and Joe Cipolla both made clutch throws in the 8th to slow a potential Moby rally. Another highlight was a visit by Joe Algerio who is recovering from eye surgery. And thanks to Richie and Lori D' Amico for hosting a post game barbecue. It was fantastic way to end a very good night for BMB.
After 4 weeks of scoring over 20 runs a game, Granny O'Sheas took on Barco this past Friday. Unfortunately, the runs didn't seem to come as easily this week for either team. The first inning had Grannys' Mitch Maghakian triple to right followed by a clutch RBI double by Bob Kirk. With the score 1-0, Lenny Balestrieri, smoked a thunderous shot to left field that is still coming down. Grannys stretched their lead to 7-0 in the 3rd inning when Don "Houdini" Carlin pulled another amazing grand slam out of his hat. After Barco scored 3, Mike Hadnagy helped Grannys' cause in the 7th with a SAC fly making the score 9-4. The 9th inning found each team looking to break open the low scoring game. Bob Myers led off with a single for Grannys and ended up scoring on another Bob Kirk (4 for 4) hit. In a game where every run counted for two (is that the way it goes Bob?), Grannys ended up pulling out the victory 10-7. Hats off to Bob Myers for a well pitched game and to the outfielders, including Walter Hasemann and Mickey Newbeck for some nice put outs during the game. Granny's record is now 5-3.
Barco fell from the undefeated ranks with the loss to Granny's. Terry McPartland's fence-clearing 3 run HR in the 5th put the Barco Boys back in the game, but they were unable string enough hits together to overcome the hot hitting O'Sheas team. Barco did make it interesting on Dave Saur's HR in the 6th and RBI hits from Dave Ringer, Kevin Moloney and Steve Schwind in the 8th but their 9th inning rally fell short. Barco fell to 5-1-1, but still maintained their hold onto the American Division lead.
On a sad note, the team and league would like to pass along condolences to Tom Burke and his family on the recent passing of his mom.
Mers improved to 5-3 with a 13-12 come from behind win over Changing Times by scoring seven runs in the last two innings. Changing Times opened up fast with five in the first inning and after six led 12-6. However, in the last three innings they were held scoreless to set up Mers big rally. Mers got big production by their two rookies, Mike Magro and Jack DeBobis, who went four for five and three for four respectively in the three and five batting slots. DeBobis had a team leading three RBI's. Mers two big bats, Kevin Brosnan and George Cohan, stayed hot in their three and four spots with Brosnan going four for four with two RBI's and Cohan hitting three for four. Tom Vella, Ed Healy, Joe Fanning, Tom Fitzpatrick, Bill Sutherland, and Rob Schelhorn all went two for four with Vella also having two RBI's to continue his solid run production in the six spot. In the end it was the Mers strong defensive infield and outfield play that helped set up their exciting come from behind two run top of the ninth inning victory which allowed the team to remain in contention in the National League race halfway through the season.
