Granny O'Sheas beat Mers 27-10 in the battle of the Pubs Friday night. Grannys jumped to a 4-0 lead with Lenny Balestrieri belting a two-run homer over the right center field fence. Al Celeste and Brian Mulcahy followed with RBI singles. In the fourth, O'Sheas added two more with RBI singles from Jay Donovan and Bob Myers. Mers kept pace as they plated two in the bottom half of the fourth. The fifth inning was good to both teams as Grannys added five more runs with the help of RBI singles by Don Carlin, Mike Hadnagy and Mickey Newbeck. Mers was not to be outdone and tacked on four more in the bottom half of the inning. The score was now 11-9, Grannys.
The sixth looked promising for Grannys with no outs and two men on base. Mitch Maghakian delivered a sharp, short hopper to the Mers' shortstop who tagged the runner, stepped on second and threw to first for a rarely seen triple play. Controversy ensued as an interference call was made on the first base runner, but the ump's call prevailed. Grannys recovered from the triple play though when Al Celeste belted a grand slam in the seventh. Walter Hasemann had an RBI triple in the eighth along with some redemption for Mitch "triple play" Maghakian. He sent one deep over the center field fence. Mers responded with one in the eight only to have Bruce Kubart help power the ninth along with Bob Thompson and others by delivering RBI singles that enabled Grannys to shut down Mers. Everyone had at least one base hit and one RBI each. Grannys' record now stands at 4-3 for the year.
Moby Drugs continues to play well, beating Changing Times 26-9. The offense connected for 25 hits including five homers. Henry Hassmann, Tomy Hess, John Gaffney, John Cafarella and Vinny Misuraca all "went yard" as Moby improved to 4-2-1 on the season.
Hampton Air is back on track after a tough win over Built-More Builders. Pitchers Mike Quigley and Ron Schwabe kept the team in the game while clutch hitting by Butch Flecker and Chris "the road runner" Theohrides powered Hampton to a hard fought 14-11 win.
For BMB it was another close game that didn't go its way. But Ira Berger certainly knows the way to third base. Ira tripled again as he easily led the team in three-baggers. BMB welcomed back Tom "T" Ball from his Cooperstown adventure. T-Ball claims he has only missed two games. We'll have to check the book.
Barco continued their winning ways Friday as they overcame an undermanned Bar-Boy team 29-9, giving Dave Ringer a win in his maiden game at the helm. Barco scored four in the first and never looked back as they scored in every inning. Coming up big were Gary Jambor (4-5, five runs scored two RBIs), Steve Jacobson (4-4, four runs, five RBIs), Terry McPartland (3-4, five RBIs) and Dave Ringer (4-5, four runs, four RBIs), which included hitting for the cycle. Also having good nights were Rick Pedone who smacked a home run, rookies Anthony Ranieri (3-3) and Bob Bergsten (2-3 triple). The victory improved Barco to 5-0-1.
This game represented Dave Ringer's managerial debut which was a rousing success, unfortunately it was marred by his age discrimination remark and now pending law suit. Although his comment did result in some humorous exchanges which is a trademark of this team.
It must have been that Bobby Joyce (on the DL) showed up to support his team, because Synergy broke out of its worst slump by beating Bethpage PT 9-2. The night was all Richie Dargie, who carried the team offensively and defensively. Rich had three hits and pitched masterfully to give Synergy their first victory in five games. Behind him, the combination of John Garrity and Aldo Balducci (three hits) turned four double plays.
And one other score, McCourt and Trudden beat Singleton's 18-14.
