Once again the media is predicting an active 2007 Hurricane season. While much of coverage can be chalked up to hype, there is always a chance of getting severe weather that can knock out power, cause flash flooding and other damage to your home. As we enter the hurricane season, I wanted to pass along a few tips and suggestions that could assist you if we do experience a hurricane or extreme weather here in Farmingdale. While we are fortunate that major hurricanes are very rare we still need to be prepared for them. A Hurricane Watch means that Hurricane conditions are a real possibility for an area. A Hurricane Warning means that a hurricane is expected within 24 hours and precautionary action should be taken at once.

You should listen for weather updates and stay informed. You should keep a portable radio and flashlight on hand with fresh batteries. Check all emergency supplies and equipment. Clear your yard of all loose objects. Bring inside any lawn furniture, outdoor decorations, trash cans, hanging plants and anything else that can be picked up by the wind. Store drinking water in clean containers or make sure you have an ample supply of bottled water. Shutter, board and tape all windows (if a warning is in effect). Fill your car's gas tank. Stock up on canned foods (make sure that you have some nonperishable food in the cupboards such as: tuna fish, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, etc.), medications and drinking water. Plan a flood-free evacuation route. Make arrangements now for elderly and others with special needs such as those who depend on electrical life support. All homes should have the following evacuation kit always ready in case of any emergency evacuation: battery-operated radio and flashlight, first aid kit, two-week supply of medicines, blankets or sleeping bags, extra clothing and infant necessities, personal items including books and toys, important papers (valid ID), checkbook, cash, credit and ATM cards.

After any major storm please use caution. If you must drive be aware of road conditions and storm debris on the roadways. Avoid all downed power lines -assume all have electricity. Do not enter any evacuated areas until an all-clear is issued. Once again, while hurricanes are rare we need to be prepared for them. Please take the time to prepare your family and your home to assure your safety during adverse weather conditions.
