One of my last duties of 2006 or the first of 2007, depending on how you look at it, was the swearing in of the officers and board of the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce. It was an honor for me to administer their oaths of office. The Chamber represents the whole Farmingdale community that includes the Village, East, and South Farmingdale. From Route 110 to Merritts Rd. and everything in between. Over the past few years many of my columns have made mention of the many services and events that they provide our community. Some of their events have become yearly traditions. Their Easter Egg Hunt and Holiday Parade are always a big success. Their donations of Holiday lights have helped brighten our streets and their hanging of American flags has helped us proudly promote our country. They sponsor the Holiday Tree Lighting each year and provide support to many charities throughout the year. Last week I attended their first Business Card Swap. Members and prospective members were invited to the Nutty Irishman on Main Street to meet and exchange cards. A delicious buffet provided by the Nutty Irishman made the night even more special. Attending with me was Trustee Starkie and Department of Public Works Superintendent Fred Zamparelle. The event enabled all three of us to speak with many village businesses and residents. We were able to answer questions and discuss ideas and concerns with them. We were joined by Town of Oyster Bay Councilmember Anthony Macagnone who took time from his busy schedule to make sure he had an opportunity to talk with the chamber members. I also had time to talk with Chamber President Debbie Podolski and Past President and current Treasurer Pete Yovine. Their leadership past and present has played an integral part in the growth of the greater Farmingdale business district. I was pleased to review with them some of the exciting changes on the horizon for the downtown area. I urge all businesses and organizations to join and get involved. I also recommend all residents to support the chamber's members by shopping locally and patronizing the various professionals who are also members. To learn more about the chamber you can visit their web site at www.farmingdalenychamber.org or you can link to their site when visiting the Farmingdale Village www.farmingdalevillage.com.
