After losing to Freeport 30-10 in the regular season, the Dalers knew they had a tough job ahead of them. They met the Red Devils again at Hofstra Stadium on Thursday, Nov. 9 for the Nassau County Conference I semifinals.
The Dalers received the opening kickoff and started to put their plan to work. The first few plays of the game the Dalers were picking up great yardage against the powerful Red Devils defense, but there was one problem, Penalties. Three penalties against the Dalers kept bringing back the ball. Before you knew it the Dalers faced a fourth and 25, and the Dalers had to punt. On the Red Devils first offensive drive they connected a 52-yard pass for a touchdown and made the PAT to lead 8-0. On the Dalers next possession, again the Dalers started to move the ball, but those penalties were coming again. Dalers quarterback Steve Probst tied playoff record last week against Uniondale with four touchdown passes, put the ball up again, but this time it was picked off by Freeport. Eight plays later it was 14-0 Freeport. The Dalers offense just could not get the job done. It seemed like Freeport's defense was just better. The Dalers defense was doing a good job but Freeport's offense was on the field too long. It was important to try to keep this game close before halftime, but with only 26 seconds left in the first half Freeport struck again with a six-yard run for a touchdown. At halftime the score was 22-0.
In the second half it was a little better for the Dalers, but not much. The Dalers defense kept the Red Devils offense from scoring in the third quarter, but the Red Devils defense sacked Dalers quarterback Probst in the end zone for a safety. Finally in the forth quarter the Dalers connected a 49-yard pass play to #19 Travis Lyons for a touchdown. The Dalers got on the board 24-6. Freeport came right back with their powerful and speedy offense and scored again to make it a 32-6 loss for the Dalers.
Freeport is rated No. 2, are 8-1 and only lost to No.1 East Meadow this year will meet again for the finals at Hofstra. The Dalers came into this game rated No.3 with a 6-2 record, with their only losses to Freeport and East Meadow. The Dalers had a great season led by Head Coach Buddy Krumenacker.
