Super Sunday at Woodward Parkway Field ended a bit soggy, but not before most of the season ending PAL-NFL Flag Football games were played and not before hundreds of players received awards and lunch. It was a fantastic finish to another fun-filled season of flag football in Farmingdale. There is one bright side to Sunday's rainy weather, one more week of action for some.
It may have been raining, but the Steelers and the Jets still played an action-packed game. The Steelers' first touchdown was scored by Kaitie Sutherland with Nadine Hadnagy getting the extra point. Nadine followed with another touchdown, while a third score was added by Amanda Turtorrro. Courtney Hroch had a beautiful interception and run for a touchdown. Final score: Steelers 25, Jets 0.
Great season for the Grasshopper Division. Thank you to all the coaches, players and parents. The Jets, Giants, Vikings and Chiefs all had a winning season. Have a great winter and we will see everyone next season.
The Mighty Patriots ended the season the same way they started, strong right to the end. Making his debut as quarterback against the Steelers, Michael "Downtown" Browne found Dayna "the Scooter" D'Antonio in the end zone. Chris "the Defender" Stauber executed a perfect screen play to Trevor "the Trevornator" Clark for another touchdown. Later, Nick "the Quick" Reid, out of Coach Vinny's "I formation," ran almost the full length of the field for a touchdown. Nick "Touchdown Twin" Cappellino, Anthony "The Boomer" Barbuto, Michael "Crazy Legs" Simmons, Nicholas "Fireball" Fiorentino and Thomas "Lightning" Gallo all made great contributions on offense and defense. Coaches Al Cappellino, Vincent Barbuto and John Stauber never coached a finer group of kids. It was their pleasure and privilege to work with these athletes and young lady and gentlemen.
The Giants and Chiefs played a spirited game between the raindrops! Michael Muccio-Schrimpe, Braden Weill, Luke Morales, Vincent Gagliardi, Mark Bakich and Dominick Baranello all contributed on offense with some big runs in the mud. Dominick and Vincent also played great at quarterback while all six boys made many big stops on defense in the Giants' season finale.
The Peanut Jets ran in between the raindrops and made the best of their last game of the season. Determined not to let their fans down, lots of great plays were executed as they showed off all they learned. They played for as long as they could on the flooding fields and then went on to get their trophies to be rewarded for a job well-done. They posed for pictures with great big proud smiles, never giving a thought to the fact that they were soaked to the bone and covered with mud.
Coaches Colleen and Tom thank the parents for their support and for doing a tremendous job of getting the kids to their games well-prepared and braving the elements these past weeks. Their enthusiasm is what makes coaching worthwhile.
A perfect end to a perfect season, the Steelers go undefeated 11-0. Congratulations to the Browns on a great game. Well, how do we begin? We begin by congratulating all of these boys who made "our dream come true." Nick Bifalco, James Cavanaugh, Joey Hunt, Matthew Giocastro, Tommy McPartland, Kevin Mummulo, Bobby Norton, Nicky Seyfert, Franco Stroccia. And a huge thank you to all the parents and families for all you support all through the year.
The Peewee Chiefs had a terrific season and ended by winning the Super Bowl, thanks to the great teamwork and determination of everyone on the team. Both games went very well. It is never one player who wins, but the hard work of all of everyone that makes for a successful season. Even the rain didn't stop these Chiefs. The parents and players would like to thank coach Greg and coach Bill for their time and effort in coaching this team and for an action packed season.
The Jets advanced to the Junior Varsity Super Bowl after hard-fought victories over the Panthers and the Patriots. Jonathan Smalkin was a major force for the Jets in both games, weaving through defenders to score numerous clutch touchdowns. Against the Panthers, Joe Valente had a key touchdown, just getting the ball over the goal line. Vincent Mavaro also had a long touchdown run while Joe McBane and Joe Salonia anchored the defense. In game two, Paul Cohen was all over the field on offense and defesne. Brian Mazza caught a touchdown pass and later showed great concentration catching a long pass that was deflected. Andrew Hanc grabbed a key pass for an extra point, while Joe McBane picked off a Patriots' extra point attempt.
It was a huge week for the Colts as they won both of their tournament games and advanced to the Super Bowl. They can thank their defense, a unit that allowed only eight points in two games. In game one, the Colts beat the Steelers 21-0. Jake "the snake" Dickinson threw a touchdown pass to Richie Sullivan and two more to Anthony Bonilla. Richie and Anthony also scored extra points as did Eric Wolfert. On defense Matt Podbielak and Matt Lubliner led the way with numerous flag pulls. Nathan Kircheim had a big interception and Chris Witt led the pass rush. TJ Knight also stopped a big run with a timely flag pull. Nicky Mio played great offense and "D" to help in this shutout victory. It was the next game that surprised everyone as the Colts pulled off a big upset over the undefeated Browns by the score of 39-8. Jake Dickinson tossed touchdowns to Anthony Bonilla, Erik Wolfert and to Nicky Mio who ran in from midfield. Extra points were added by Richie Sullivan and Matt Lubliner. It was defense again that won it for the Colts as Matt Podbielak ran in two interceptions for touchdowns and Richie S. added another touchdown off an interception. The two Matts, Lubliner and Podbielak led the team again with numerous flags grabbed. Chris Witt played fantastic defense all day with a number of great stops. TJ Knight and Nathan Kircheim played tough all game.
The Cinderella story continues for the Steelers! After splitting two games last week the Steelers faced the Browns for the third time this season. The third time would be a classic! The Browns came out like gangbusters, taking a 13-0 lead, but the Steelers would not quit. After Brendan "I'm Back" Nocella hit Jonathan Sindicic with a touchdown pass, Steve Kayola followed with a INT touchdown return and the game was tied! From that point on it was a see-saw battle that led to overtime. On the Steelers first possession, Lucas Sall hit Jonathan Sindicic on a 50-yard bomb for a touchdown. The Browns marched right back down the field, but on third down the Steeler "D" would not break as Jonathan Sindicic knocked down what would have been the game tying touchdown to seal the 40-34 win.
Brown notables: Connor Lewis several touchdowns, Gio Mio two touchdowns, Ryan Lewis was outstanding at quarterback and Hank Starkie put constant pressure on The Steeler quarterbacks.
The battle between the regular season undefeated teams saw the Vikings beat the Colts 13-6. The Colts scored on the opening drive and then the Viking defense shut them down. Offensively, the Vikings got touchdown passes from Steven Harris and Alex Brosnan. The catches were made by Keith McNicholl and Mike Zelazny. Alex and Steven also had big interceptions. The whole team played solid defense. The second game was postponed when the rain moved in.
