It was one of the windiest days you will ever see, but it didn't stop the boys and girls of Farmingdale's PAL-NFL Flag Football League from competing Sunday at Woodward Parkway Field. This Sunday, most divisions begin tournament play, while the younger players get two more weeks of "flag fun".
The Lady Chiefs and Lady Giants kept warm on very chilly day by taking turns running the ball up and down the field. Niamh was awesome with three big flag pulls, a touchdown pass to Danielle and scoring two extra points. Danielle threw a touchdown pass to Jackie, made an interception and caught a pass which she ran for a touchdown. Katie played solid defense, ran for two touchdowns and scored a two-point conversion. Deanna played solid defense and offense and had two big flag pulls. Jessica provided excellent offensive and defensive pressure. Jackie came up big on the first play, she caught a pass from Danielle and ran it all the way for a touchdown. Jackie also sacked the Giants quarterback preventing a touchdown. Sabatina ran for a touchdown on the second play of the game. She was solid on defense with several big flag pulls including a pull, with only seconds remaining and the Chiefs down by seven, turning the ball over to the Chiefs. Danielle then perfectly executed the Statue of Liberty Play to Sabatina who ran the length of the field for a touchdown. The Chiefs then tried the same play for extra point except Sabatina handed the ball to Katie who ran the ball in for the game winning two-point conversion. Final Score: Chiefs 34, Giants 33.
The Steelers had a great day, the parents froze and everyone says it was worth it. Touchdowns were scored by Maggie Fleming and Nadine Hadnagy. Extra points were scored by Justine Fernandez and Kaitie Sutherland. Lauren Renna had two great interceptions. Jen Labias on the Vikings also had a great interception. Final score Steelers 21, Vikings 0. Special thanks to Coach Chris Fleming who handled the defense and Coach Rob Godas who was in charge of the offense.
The Giants and Jets battled this past Sunday for Peanut bragging rights. The Giant offense came up huge once again, with dazzling touchdown runs from Connor Hess, Kevin DiLeonardo and Sean Moloney. Dean Pagano and Tyler Moloney each broke loose for some big yards on exciting runs that had the crowd on their feet. The Giant defense had their hands full trying to contain a speedy Jets attack. Joseph Vigliano, Jack Livingston, Tyler Sullivan and Tom Donovan led the way with sacks and all around great play on defense. Everyone was blown away by another great effort (or was that the wind?)!
The Jets tried to keep control of the ball despite the gusting wind. Michael Thiem made the crowd roar when he scored the only touchdown for the Jets. He ran down the field, dodging his opponents as they tried in vain to grab his flags. Jake Formisano is always a key player with his signature "fake" plays. Michael Thiem and Matthew Muccio-Schrimpe led the Jets' defense by pulling some great flags. Christopher Natale, Anna Kate Dickinson, Christian Marrone and Nicolena Spadalik continue to show their love for the game and have become great flag players along with the rest of their team. Michael A'Hearn always has a great big smile and runs his little legs off week after week.
The PeeWee-4 Chiefs are really playing well together as a team. They get better each and every week and most importantly seem to be having fun all at the same time. The team parents would like to thank Coach Greg and Coach Bill for doing a great job with these little floggers.
The Chiefs ended a four-game losing streak, beating the Jets 27-13. Offensively the Chiefs were led by early touchdown plays to Stephen Cain and John Cozzolino. In the second half, Anthony Speelman zigzagged his way up the field for a touchdown. Sam Chernakoff ran back an interception for a touchdown late in the game to seal the victory. All the Chiefs contributed throughout the game. The Jets were led by touchdown scores from Tom Reilly and Michael Kelly.
The Raiders and Jets hooked upon a blustery day as the "Black and Silver" looked to continue their winning ways. Joe DePalma led the ground attack with two long runs in the first half to give the Raiders an early 12-0 lead. The Jets answered with a Vincent Mavaro touchdown and two-point conversion run by Paul Cohen to close the gap to 12-8 at halftime. The second half saw Nick Eustaquio connect with Mike Neglia on a scoring pass to increase the Raiders' lead to 18-8. The Raiders' defense, led by Andrew Presta, Prateek Khurana and Fred Kezer who each made outstanding plays, as did Jack Garner, Frank Pellegrino and Robert Warshauer, to preserve the Raiders' victory.
The JV-6 Chiefs faced off against a tough Patriots team. The story of game was Defense, Defense and Defense. PJ Spadailk led the Chiefs with two interceptions returned for touchdowns and numerous flag pulls. The "Sackinator", Garrett O'Reilly, led the Chiefs with a big flag pull after a long run to stop the Pats from scoring and three huge sacks, two on the Pats last drive of the game. Another interception by Mike Castagnaro, who also had three big flag pulls. Brian McGuiness (four flag pulls), Nick Catalano, Michael Waldman and Andrew Phillips also provided superb defensive pressure. Excellent passing and play calling by Angelo Mauro, Michael W., Mike C and PJ. Solid defensive pressure by Tyler Sullivan, Brian and Andrew. Final Score Chiefs 12, Pats 6.
The Steelers scored six touchdowns as they beat the Vikings 38-19. A great run by James D'Antonio. Three touchdown passes thrown by Anthony Colecchia to Joe Lavista. Chris Lopez also caught a touchdown pass from James. Will Rogers caught an extra point as both the Steelers and Vikings played well.
The Vikings beat the Chiefs 28-12. George Calvo had a touchdown pass to Keith McNicholl and an interception. Alex Brosnan had two touchdown passes both to Steven Harris. Steven also made the defensive play of the year when he ran down a runner from across the field and dove full speed about 12 feet through the air, probably more like 15 feet, pulling the flag while in mid-air. Paul Giglio, who has improved every week at quarterback, had a touchdown pass to Keith and two conversions to Joe Kennedy. Keith and Steve also had interceptions. Great pass rushing again by Zachary Pardo,Thomas Pich and great flag pulling by Billy Specht and Mike Zelazny, Mike also had an extra conversion.
The Steelers coming off a tough loss, rebounded to win their first game of the year. The defense which has improved each of the last three weeks, scored three touchdowns to lead the Steelers to a 33-14 win over the Browns. Steeler notables: Jonathan Sindicic two interceptions, three touchdowns, Steve Kayola two touchdown passes, Lucas Sall one touchdown reception, three extra point conversions, Nico Rivera five receptions, 100 yards receiving, one touchdown and the Defensive player of the game. Danny Castillo had five tackles, two interceptions and a touchdown. Brown Notables: Jordan Merchan one touchdown reception and Gio Mio one interception returned for a touchdown. The Steelers playing their best ball of the year look forward to the end of the season tournament and the possible return of star runningback Ross Flanagan. Despite the loss last week, the Steeler coaches would like to applaud the play of Jack Persampire who played his heart out. Jack had three sacks and put constant pressure on the Vikings quarterback to keep the Steelers in the game.
