If you were wondering if the Farmingdale Fire Departments sirens were broken or being tested last weekend, that was not the answer. The volunteer firefighters answered 17 calls for help during the nor'easter that struck Long Island last weekend. Wind gusts that hit 63 mph at Farmingdale's Republic Airport wreaked much havoc in the area from power lines burning in trees, downed power lines, transformer fires and auto accidents. The Rescue Squad responded to nine ambulance calls. During some of the downed power line calls, the fire department had to wait for the power to be turned off by LIPA before they could leave the area, which at one call was three hours. On a few occasions the firefighers fielded multiple calls simultaneously.
