After six weeks of action, the boys and girls of Farmingdale PAL-NFL Flag Football League are starting to "rev" up their play and intensity with the annual end of season tournament approaching. Here are some of the highlights as reported by league coaches.
Danielle's two late interceptions proved to be the difference as the junior varsity Lady Vikings had a fantastic comeback win against the Lady Chiefs. Alexis had a long touchdown run and an interception for a touchdown. Nicole made a great pass for another touchdown. The defense was led by Heather, Kristen and Alyssa.
For the Lady Chiefs, Danielle C. had six key flag pulls, an interception and threw a touchdown pass. Katie W. ran for a touchdown, caught two passes which she ran for touchdowns. Niamh M. ran the ball in for two extra points. Deanna R. threw a pass for a touchdown and caught a long pass from Danielle. Jackie S. ran the ball in for two extra points and had a sack. Jessica S. started a big triple reverse which led to a touchdown and almost scored two extra points but was stopped at the goal line. Sabatina M. ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Katie. In the end, the Lady Chiefs were unable to hold off the Lady Vikings who came back to win with seconds remaining.
The Giants battled the Colts in the Peanut version of Manning vs. Manning this Sunday. The potent Giant offense was featured once again, with Connor Hess, Tom Donovan, Kevin DiLeonardo, Tyler Sullivan and Tyler Moloney, each with touchdown runs, catches or passes. On defense, the Giants corralled the Colts ground and air game. The total team effort on "D" was led by the flag pulling and relentless pursuit of Sean Moloney, Sean McCann, Joseph Vigliano, Dean Pagano and Jack Livingston.
The mighty Peanut-2 Patriots just keep rolling as their high flying offense proved too much for the Jets. While the tough and stingy Patriots defense only let up one Jets touchdown all day. Spirited defense from the entire Patriots squad. Excellent runs by Nick "the Quick" Reid, Nick "Fireball" Fiorentino, Thomas "Lighting" Gallo and Trevor "the Trevornator" Clark. While Anthony "Boomer" Barbuto, Nick "Touchdown Twin" Cappellino and Chris "the Defender" Stauber were great at quarterback and also on the receiving end.
The Peanut Jets kept their fans warm by giving them a chance to clap and cheer at every turn. After a few weeks off, Christian Marrone came back with a bang, making a phenomenal run and came oh-so-close to crossing the goal line. Anna Kate Dickinson stood her ground rushing the quarterback. Nicolas Rutig used his speed and managed to dodge the Patriots defense all the way down the field and ran the ball in for a touchdown. Jake Formisano made an incredible interception toward the end of the game. All of the players continue to improve each week and have done a great job learning all of the different positions.
The Giants put on an impressive display of football on Sunday. Vincent Gagliardi and Stephen Pantano pulled off a successful double reverse that Stephen ran into the end sone after a long run. Jack Macaluso, Joey Kosinski, Luke Morales and Mark Bakich also contributed big runs on offense while making important stops on defense. Michael Muccio-Schrimpe scored another touchdown on an impressive run, while Braden Weill made a nice catch and run on one of the many impressive passes thrown by quarterback Dominick Baranello.
The Browns took on a talented Chiefs squad and came up on the short end of a wide open game. The Browns defense was led by the relentless pursuit and flag pulling skills of Chris Moloney, Bryan Labas, Scott DePalma, Sean Yashnyk and Steven Kelly. The "D" made some big plays to slow down the Chiefs potent running and passing attack. On offense, the Browns were led by the steady quarterback play of Tim Acton and Nick DiMartino, and the shifty running of Paul Desimone who accounted for both Browns touchdowns. The Browns missed the offensive and defensive contributions of Ryan Goldberg and Brian Bertrano (sidelined with a bad leg) this week.
The Raiders returned to their winning ways this week. On their first drive, Raiders receiver Joe DePalma scored on a double reverse, covering the length of the field. The Raiders scored again on their next drive on a hook and ladder play from Mike Neglia to Prateek Khurana to DePalma, who again took it the length of the field. The Giants came back to score on two long runs by Patrick Lively to take a 14-12 half time lead. The second half took a decidedly defensive turn as DePalma picked off the Giants twice and Khurana adding a third interception, all leading to scores. Nick Eustaquio, Fred Kezer, Jack Garner and Andrew Presta each made key defensive stops as the Raiders went on to a 37-14 victory.
The Chiefs and Browns played an exciting back and fourth game. On the first drive, after Michael Waldman ran for a short gain, PJ Spadalik connected with Brian McGuiness at midfield who ran for the touchdown. Later, after great defensive pressure by Michael, Brian, PJ and Garrett O'Reilly, Andrew Phillips ran the ball for a big gain. Angelo Mauro then connected with PJ with a touchdown pass. Garrett was amazing on defense with five or more flag pulls to stop the Browns in their tracks. Andrew sacked the Browns quarterback to force a turnover. Mike Castagnaro and Nicky Catalano, were both huge on defense all day. Finals score: Browns 29 Chiefs 19.
The Colts ended up winning the game 30 to 28 in what became a close match up.
The Steelers jumped out to an early lead with a touchdown pass from Anthony Colecchia to Joe Lavista. Joe Lavista followed up interception and return for a touchdown. Micheal Desrochers scored the extra point on a pass from Anthony Colecchia. James D'Antonio ran for a touchdown and Micheal Desrochers again scored the extra point on a pass from Anthony Colecchia. The Colts came back with several touchdowns but the Steelers defense prevented any extra points from being scored, one of which was stopped by an interception by Chris Lopez. Joe Lavista had a sack for a Safety to bring the Steelers within eight late in the game. Will Rogers scored on a touchdown pass from Chris Lopez to bring the score within two but Colts prevented the Steelers from converting the two-point conversion. Great defense by the Steelers allowed some more attempts for offense to score but the Colts held on for the win.
The Vikings won again after a hard fought win against the Steelers. The first half saw the Vikings play some poor defense but the offense was able to score 20 pts. Paul Giglio had his first of two touchdown passes with a nice pass to Mike Zelazny, Mike also had a key interception. George Calvo had a touchdown pass to Alex Brosnan and Alex returned the favor with a two-point conversion to George. Joe Kennedy had an interception that he returned for a touchdown. The second half saw the defense wake up led by some great pass rushing by Zachary Pardo, Bill Specht and Thomas Pich. Zachary missed getting a safety by an inch and still pulled the receivers flag half way down the field, he never gave up on the play. Paul had a second half touchdown pass to Steven Harris and Steven later on scored again when he returned an interception for a score. Final Vikings 33 Steelers 21.
This week the Browns came up with a big 55-18 victory over the Colts, improving their record to 4-2. The team barely had enough players to start the game. Touchdowns were made by Giovanni Mio, Ryan Lewis, Nick Russo, and Connor Lewis. Each of these boys made numerous interceptions. Ryan Fredericks was not feeling well earlier, but still made it to the game and threw some excellent passes as quarterback, as well as rushing on defense. The coaches were very proud of the Browns for playing such a competitive game with only five players and no substitutes.
