It was a week of fantastic finishes at Woodward Parkway Field as the boys and girls of Farmingdale's PAL-NFL Flag Football League continue to put on quite a show.
The Lady Chiefs played tough, but came up short vs. the Lady Jets. Tina ran the entire length of the field for a TD. Deanna threw a pass to Katie, which she ran for a TD. Katie also scored another TD on a triple reverse. Jessica, Jaclyn and Niamh also played solid offense with good plays and big yardage. Solid defense by all with several key flag pulls by Katie and great pressure by Niamh to force the runner out of bounds. Final score: Lady Jets 31, Lady Chiefs 18.
The Steelers win again. Great play by Justine Fernandez to knock the ball out of the receiver's hands allowing Maggie Fleming to intercept. TD's this week were by Maggie Fleming, Lauren Renna, Justine Fernandez and Amanda for the Steelers. The Vikings TD's were scored by Cindy Burhans and Camille DiDonna. Courtney Hroch pitched in with a beautiful interception. Final score Steelers 31 Vikings 12.
The Browns and Chiefs played a thriller! The Browns began with an interception TD by Brenna Weill, followed by a 2-point extra point pitch from Elizabeth Yashnyk to Jenna Crawford. But the Giants responded with 3 scores, one by Katie Ciccarelli, a TD pass to Julie Teller, and an interception run back by Denise Dessel. The Giants offense answered with great runs by Alexa Beach, Marisa Martone, Lauren Zelazny and another TD by Julie Teller. The Brown scored 3 more times on an interception run back by Cara Kelly and two interception returns by Melissa Kelly, and a 2-point conversion pass to Jaime-Lee Narad brought the game down to the wire with the Giants taking the win 31-28.
The Grasshoppers were out in force with the Giants taking on the Vikings and the Jets battling the Chiefs. For the Jets, Mike Mendell and Devin Castagenaro were the two primary QBs, taking their snaps from Brendon Molloy and Christina Hassett. Matthew Lutz and Matthew McCaffery ran the pass patterns in the Viking's secondary while Jevon Evans took care of the Jets ground game.
Defensively, Mario Febbraro provided the Jets with pass rushing, keeping the Chiefs passing game to a minimum, while Ivan Martinez roamed the secondary with several open field flag pulls.
The Giants game was marked by lots of exciting offense! Mark Bakich, Joseph Kosinski, Jack Macaluso, Luke Morales, Michael Muccio-Schrimpe, Braden Weill and Stephen Pantano each had long runs that led to pay dirt! Dominick Baranello and Vincent Gagliardi played fantastic at quarterback in leading the G-Men on numerous TD drives. Of course, the defense played a great game, with all of the boys making big stops on nearly every Browns drive.
The Giants took on a tough bunch of Vikings this week. The team brought their "A" game on offense with Sean McCann, Dean Pagano, Tyler Sullivan and Sean Moloney leading the way. On defense the Giants rocked the Vikings boat with a swarming attack, led by Tyler Moloney, Jack Livingston, Joseph Vigliano, Kevin DiLeonardo, Connor Hess and Thomas Donovan. Congratulations to all the Giants on another great game.
The Peanut Jets just keep getting better and better. The Jets faced the Chiefs and put on a great show for all to see. Anna Kate Dickinson made a terrific catch and ran like mad toward the end zone. Ryan Smith wowed the fans with a great run, too. Nicolena Spadalik showed off her flag-pulling skills and gave the Chiefs a run for their money. The Peanut Jets have mastered their double reverse and who knows what they'll have to show us next Sunday! Stay tuned!
The Browns and Patriots tangled in week 3 with Thomas Catalano again showing his football talent by stutter-stepping around the end and then suddenly taking off in a full gallop to the end zone. Later, little Johanna Chernakoff took a hand-off from Jesse Nicolich and went full blast around the end all the way to the end zone.
The offense, with Connor McCann, Billy Andrade, Joe Healey, Andrew D'Abbraccio and Brandon McGlynn, executed 4 hand-off plays - Great Effort! Brandon, Jesse, Thomas and Robbie Ryan attempted 3 pass plays - Another Great Effort! On defense, the entire team, including our "mad rusher" Robbie Ryan, caused some problems for the Patriots offense.
The Patriots started slow against the tough Browns. The Patriots scored 5 TD's, Anthony "Boomer" Barbuto to Dayna "The Scooter" D'Antonio, Chris "the Defender" Stauber to Nick "TD Twin" Cappellino, Thomas "Lightning" Gallo on a TD run and Michael "Crazy Legs" Simmons on another great run. Trevor "the Trevornator" as always great on defense caught a great pass and Nick "the Quick" Reid and Nick "Fireball" Fiorentino had great games. Michael Simmons was presented with the game ball.
In a real defensive battle, the Giants beat the Browns 7-6. The Giants were down 6-0 when Jack Nonnenmann ran the length of the field for a touchdown and extra point. The game was all about defense with Frank Borgi making a great interception. Michael Flanagan, Richie Kevan and Patrick Reilly were also unbelievable at keeping the Browns from scoring the winning touchdown at the end of the game.
The Browns took on the Giants this past Sunday and staged a big comeback to end the game in a tie. The Browns defense was lead by the great all-around play of Nick DeMartino, Sean Yashnyk, Steven Kelly, Bryan Labas and Brian Bertrano. The "D" made some key interceptions to stop Giant drives and set up the game's tying score. On offense the Browns were led by the steady QB play of Ryan Goldberg and some long TD runs by Paul Desimone and Chris Moloney, and clutch TD catches by Scott DePalma. The Browns coaches are proud of all the boys and their "never quit" attitude.
The Steelers defense was at it again with an impressive 34-12 win. The offense was kicking and everyone played with heart. Matt G. was great on defense and Tommy had an amazing all around game. Nicky was great on offense scoring points. Bobby N. played great at quarterback while Franco also added an interception. Matt G. grabbed flags like crazy. Great game by the entire team!
The Chiefs and Jets battled it out with the Jets earning a thrilling 25-24 win on a TD pass to Michael Catanzaro as time ran out. Catanzaro also scored on a beautiful interception return. His extra-point conversion earlier in the game proved to be the difference. Other Jets scores were by Michel Kelly and Cory Gloe. Chiefs' scorers included Steven Cain, Alexander Schmidt, Sam Chernakoff and Kyle Hacker.
The Patriots fought hard again to beat the Steelers 18-0. Domenic Strano and Chris Griesche caught numerous passes to lead the offense. James Pawlowski chipped in on both offense and defense catching a key pass, and grabbing several flags to shut down the Steeler offense. Enough couldn't be said for the fantastic defense of Sean Sullivan putting pressure on the quarterback and grabbing clutch flags down the stretch.
The Chiefs and Jets played a squeaker. Angelo Mauro threw a long lateral to PJ Spadalik who threw a bomb to Michael Waldman. The Browns took the ball back on an interception by Zack Yashnyk, followed by a TD pass from Brett Davies to Yashnyk. Tinney and Joe DiLauro scored once more each to make the score 31-0. Richie Sullivan grabbed a nice pass from Jake in the end zone for two points. Nathan Kircheim and Matt Podbielak each made key interceptions. Chris Witt, Matt Lubliner, and TJ Knight all helped to make it another exciting football game.
The Giants comeback against the Vikings fell short, but it provided the fans with an exciting game. The difference turned out to be a 2-point safety surrendered by the Jets in the first half. Evan Saur and Rob Tempesta rushed the passer with Tempesta getting his second sack of the season, and Saur twice caught the Viking backs behind the line of scrimmage. Kevin Hassett's blocked pass and Patrick Lively's multiple flag pulls rounded out the defense.
With 4 minutes left, the Giants began their comeback when Jimmy McQuade intercepted a pass. The turnover, which was converted into a Giant touchdown on a reception from Tyler Byrnes to Raymond Webb, cut the Viking lead to eight. Earlier, William Hassett hit Webb for another TD catch, one of 4 TD's he had. With seconds left, Webb's interception and coast-to-coast return for a score cut the seemingly insurmountable Viking lead to 2. But with the Giants needing 2 to tie, the Viking defense came up big, deflecting Tyler Byrnes pass to Patrick Lively in the end zone securing the Viking victory.
The Vikings won again with a 46-4 victory over the Giants. This was a solid defensive effort by everyone, especially Zachary Pardo rushing the QB and Joe Kennedy intercepting several passes and returning one for a score. Keith McNicholl had 3 touchdown receptions and Alex Brosnan had 3 touchdown passes. George Calvo had a TD pass to Steven Harris and Bill Specht had a TD pass to Paul Giglio. Every player got involved in the offense with 5 different quarterbacks. The Vikings have only let up 24 points so far this year. Next week is a tough test against the speedy Colts.
The struggling Steelers pulled into Colts Country to catch the Lettiere/Legotte Show and those boys lived up to their billing. Despite losing 2 more key players to injury, the Steelers continue to improve and are looking forward to next week's game. Steeler notables: Jonathan Sindicic did his best impersonation of the injured Ross Flanagan scoring 3 long TD's while Jack Persampire had a big sack. Colt notables: Frankie Lettiere 3 TD receptions, Anthony Leggotte threw 4 TD passes and scored 1 TD on an INT return and Thomas Waskiewicz 1 long TD reception. Best wishes to Danny Flanagan get well soon, pal.
