David Stein

Fifty-seven wins, zero losses and nine gold medals. Those are standards of excellence that most can only dream of achieving in the world of athletics. But for David Stein, 31, of Levittown, those numbers are a reality.

Stein has been coaching the USA Women's Basketball team at the JCC Maccabi Games, a.k.a. Jewish Olympics, every August since 1999, when he was the ripe old age of 24. Since then he has compiled that staggering 57-game winning streak. Between 1999 and 2005, he has coached high school varsity players who have represented the United States in the event.

Stein was promoted this year to coaching the women's open division. The team consists of collegiate and professional players. With the promotion, came a few bumps in the road. He said there were a couple of tight games with Israel, but once again, Stein managed to grab another gold medal.

The Maccabi Games have grown to new levels, After being held in local sites such as New Jersey, Virginia, Montreal and Ohio, they were held in Sydney, Australia this year.

"After the success of the games, Sydney wants to make sure they have it every four years," Stein says. "We even played in the Olympic Park there, and when we were in Israel, the opening ceremonies were held before a sold-out crowd of 40,000."

With the increased competitive nature of the event over the years, it underscores how amazing the team's achievements have been. Competing against teams from all over the world is difficult.

The team's efforts and success drew attention from WNBA President Donna Orender. She helped to sponsor the team, which was helpful, considering a nine-day trip to Australia is quite expensive.

During the school year, Stein is a physical education teacher at Northside Elementary School in Farmingdale and assistant coach of the Farmingdale High School girls varsity basketball team. He graduated from FHS in 1993 and was a member of the varsity basketball squad. He then went on to play Division II basketball at Concord College in West Virginia.

"I owe a lot of my success to the head coach at Farmingdale, Pete Cerrone, for giving me the opportunity to coach and for also serving as a mentor," Stein said.

Stein said his basketball coaching career is far from winding down.

"I would definitely like to coach on the college level, and I feel this experience will certainly help me toward achieving that goal," he said.

But does that mean he is done with the USA team at the Maccabi Games? "No," Stein said. "Being undefeated, sometimes you want to just leave on top. But the competitor in me just won't let me do that."
