Herman I. (Deacon Rody) Rodenburg , of Farmingdale, died peacefully at home with his family by his side on Aug. 8, 2006. He was a parishioner at St. Kilian RC Church since 1953. John Hajdusek died on Aug. 8, 2006. He was born in 1917 and was a resident of Bethpage for more than 54 years. He was a patriot and veteran of WWII serving on LST 655. He was an honorary deputy chief of the Bethpage Fire Dept. and member for more than 50 years. John was unselfish in thought and deed and will be greatly missed by family and friends. He leaves his wife of more than 67 years, Evelyn. Also survived by his children, Richard, Marion (Daniel), Rosemary and John; three grandchildren; and many friends. Irma Suner Thomas passed away from natural causes on Aug. 15, 2006 at Winthrop University Hospital. Born Irma Gloria Suner, she was orphaned at an early age and spent much of her childhood under the tutelage of Episcopal nuns in Red Hook, NY, and foster homes in Albany and Loudenville, NY.
As a teenager she returned to the Bronx to live with her two older brothers, graduated from George Washington High School in New York City and was trained as a beautician. In the mid 1930s she settled on LI in Port Washington where she met and married Port Washington native Charles R. (Buzz) Thomas in November 1941.
Following WWII, the Thomas' settled in Farmingdale where Irma involved herself in numerous volunteer activities for school, charities of many sorts and especially at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, where she was an active member, served on numerous committees and directed many fund-raising efforts over the decades. In the 1960s she was deeply involved in the Episcopal Society for Cultural and Racial Unity, which was a particular passion of the rector at the time, Fr. Robert Hampshire.
Irma was an active bridge player, less so a golfer, but her particular specialty was gardening; she was distributing a bumper crop of tomatoes from her garden to neighbors as recently as last week.
Irma was predeceased by her two brothers but is survived by her husband; a son Richard S. Thomas of New Canaan, CT; and grandson Christopher G. Thomas, Ph.D., of Washington, DC.
Arrangements were made by the Arthur F. White Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 298 Conklin St., Farmingdale, on Aug. 26 at 11 a.m.
