On Aug. 18, the Over The Hill Gang will be hosting their annual Charity Event. This year the league will benefit Friends4Jillian, a group formed by a highly motivated local women who are out to help assist a Farmingdale family whose baby was born with serious health issues. The league will play an inter-division All-Star Game along with holding their annual Home Run Hitting Contest as well as hosting other fundraising activities. Come out and support this worthy cause and enjoy in all the festivities. Guest managers are league alumnus Jim Reilly for the American League and Joe Traina for the rival Nationals.
This week's article for the Aug. 4 games will be an abbreviated one as the following games didn't provide scores never mind highlights; Hampton Air vs. Changing Times, Mers vs. O'Sheas, and Bar Boy vs. M&T. In a contest between the top two teams in the American League, only one showed up as Synergy spanked Barco 23-10. Middle game inspiration came from Bob Ceriello who tripled to spark a rally when Synergy was starting to flatten out. Once again rookie John Garrity homered over the right center fence while Denny Oehl led his team with five hits. Also with multi-hit nights were Joe "Mr. Dependable" Lutz, Bob Cruickshank, and Tommy Vanasco. Fortunately, Bob Joyce did not strike out this week. The heat must have gotten to Big Mike Mormino, who hit a double this week to the same spot he got a homer last week. Veteran Richie Dargie pitched a great game on the mound. For Barco Dennis Ryan had a three-hit night while Dave Saur and Dave Ringer each drove in a pair. Contrary to what Dennis R believes, Gary Jambor wasn't held up at Dunkin' Donuts trying out a new flavored donut. Don't worry Dennis we have ample supply of chalk.
Built-More Builders put together a solid all-around effort to beat a hot Moby team 15-10 on the 90-foot field. Jerry Mazza led off the game with a home run giving BMB a lead they would never relinquish. Ira Berger was like a cat on the mound snaring numerous ground balls and turning them outs. Mark Fischer was solid at shortstop as were Pete Mendelson at second base and Karl Dessel in right field. BMB welcomed back it's walking wounded, Joe Manning, Richie D'Amico and Tom Ball who all significantly contributed to the win. "T" Ball and D'Amico both had three hits. Some of the other BMB guys who had a good night at the plate, Mazza had five hits while Fischer, Beno Reverberi, Mendelson and Bobby Schubert had three hits each. Speaking of Schubert, he clocked one last week against Barco that he "legged" into a triple. Fischer also hit a shot last week for a three-run homer during BMB's loss to Barco.
Singletons rebounded in their game against Bethpage PT winning 17-8. The contest began with BPT taking an early lead of 2-0 going into the third inning but the momentum then swung in favor of Big Red who scored nine unanswered runs for a 9-2 advantage heading in to the sixth. Bethpage came back with six runs over the last four innings but Singletons countered with eight more, which put the game out of reach. Having big nights at the plate for Red with five hits each were Gary Saccaro and rookie Larry Grieshaber. Chipping in with four hits each were Benny Alberto and yes Dennis Passerretti (again), and three hit nights were had by Al Veneziano, Tom (Satch) Camarda and Rookie Alan Rapfogel (also with five RBIs).
