Joe Van Meter, a short stop/second baseman for St. Dominic's High School, competed in the second annual HIP Grand Slam Challenge at Citibank Park with over 1,300 cheering fans in attendance. The exciting game ended with the Suffolk County All-Stars defeating the Nassau County All-Stars, 11-8, giving Suffolk two straight wins. Van Meter is a resident of Farmingdale.

The two teams comprise some 36 high school seniors chosen by the sports staff of Newsday. The players were previously selected to Newsday's All-Long Island Team and were outstanding contributors to their high school programs.

The Grand Slam Challenge was sponsored by HIP Health Plan of New York, with proceeds benefiting the QuackerJack Foundation, the charitable arm of the Long Island Ducks.
