In late June of this year, Father Michael Flynn made a very drastic change in his long life of priesthood. Yes, he only traveled a few miles down the road from Our Lady of Assumption Church in Copiague, to his newest post at St. Kilian's in Farmingdale, but it still was not easy.

"Any change is difficult," Father Flynn said. "People get used to a certain way of things. Moving is never easy."

Flynn has been a priest for 34 years, spending the last 12 at Our Lady of Assumption, so changing parishes at this time of his life was a very significant decision. However, he doesn't plan to come to St. Kilian's and upset the applecart, so to speak.

"I will continue the work of the parish as has been going on for over 100 years," Flynn said. "I just want to build on the foundation my predecessors have already laid."

All the parishioners of St. Kilian's have welcomed the new pastor with open arms. His quiet, unassuming but sharp character seems to be appealing to everyone in his new environment.

Father Flynn's background is very interesting as he explains that his desire to be a priest was not something that differs from anyone who wants to be a teacher or even an astronaut, for that matter.

"I just felt a calling. It's not like a bolt of lightning hit me one day," Flynn said.

Flynn's personality and sense of humor were apparent at his installation Mass in June. When asked what he would be doing after he leaves St. Kilian's, he said, "I plan on making a stop at St. Charles down the street." That would be the cemetery.

Looks like he will be there for awhile.
