Neither a wet field, nasty weather nor the Garden City Thunder could slow down Farmingdale's 7-year-old Hawks, as they improved to 3-2 for the season with an 18-6 victory last Sunday.
After the tough Hawk defense forced a three and out on the first possession of the game, the offense began its best showing of the year. The first offensive series for Farmingdale culminated in a 15-yard touchdown run by Dylan Fitzgerald. Despite the wet conditions, the Hawk offensive, led by the sure-hands of quarterback T.J. Greco and center Steven Dentato, scored on all three first half possessions.
Conor Nelson followed the blocking of fullback Kyle Mastrelli, tackle Patrick Albert and guard Devin Selitti for the second touchdown of the game, a 12-yard sweep around the right end.
On the final drive of the first half Fitzgerald reached the end zone for his second score of the day, capping Farmingdale's scoring for the afternoon and providing the home team with an 18-0 halftime lead.
Although the Hawk offense didn't score in the second half, running backs Bobby Schmidgal and Matt Kleinhans were able to pick up chunks of yardage and keep the defense well rested and ready to snuff out any comeback attempts by the Thunder.
Farmingdale's defense just missed recording its second consecutive shutout, giving up a meaningless touchdown on the last play of the game. Safety Myles Mills, end Andres Gomez and linemen Matt "Bulldog" Santangelo, Keyshawn Petit, Brandon Bustamante, Michael Barrette, Ryan Odabasi, Chris Kelch and Anthony Danetra led the Hawk defense, which did not allow Garden City to cross midfield until the final drive of the game.
It's back to the road for the Hawks next week as they attempt to win their third in a row, traveling to face another Garden City team.
