Another beautiful day at Woodward Parkway Field as the boys and girls of Farmingdale's PAL Flag Football League competed in Week Three action. The level of play is picking up as players and coaches fine tune their playbooks and focus their defenses. Here are some of the highlights as reported by team coaches.
The Browns won their first game in an 18-12 defensive battle with the Jets. The Jets scored first on a reverse with Andrea Lopilato scoring 6 for the Jets. The Browns struck back with a pass from Elizabeth Yashnyk to Elizabeth Binckes. Following an interception by Elizabeth Yashnyk, the Browns got in scoring position on a pass to Danielle Weir. A pass from Elizabeth Yashnyk to Amanda Lubliner put the Browns ahead 12-6. The Jets pushed back, but an interception by Brenna Weill ended their drive. It was followed by a TD Pass from Elizabeth Binckes to Brenna Weill making the score 18-6. The Jets shot right back with a touchdown by Maggie Flemming making it 18-12, and put the crowd on their feet after an interception by Justine Fernandez.
The Peanut Steelers started off with a 30-yard run by the quick running Thomas Weber who cut right and left a group of Jets in the dust. Daniel Dougherty again displayed his talent as quarterback with many great plays, including a huge pass to Michael Thiem who made a great catch and ran all the way for a TD. Michael didn't stop there; he made another great catch and took it all the way for a TD. Robert Mullane made many long running plays including one for 10 yards and he would have gone even further if he wasn't knocked out of bounds. Kevin Mumolo again made very big defensive plays, as did Kyle Tucker who never gave up on the defense. Kevin Costanza made a smooth play when he took a handoff and ran it 20 yards for a TD. Devin Miller made a nice run showing some good speed.
The high powered Chiefs played a great game on both sides of the ball against the Silver and Black. The defense was led by Conner Costarella and the blitzing twins Paul and Anthony Morante. Will Hroch and Jack Nonnenmann did a super job running the pigskin while Sean McCann caught a bomb from Tom Donovan. Herm Edwards was spotted on the sidelines looking at some QB prospects.
The Peanut Eagles came out strong this week against a talented Browns squad. Leading the offense were Jake Hueskin and Sean Sookraj, each with a long TD run. Connor Doran, Brendan Gallagher and Lucas Sowers also came up with some big plays to put the Eagles offense in good field position. On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles were led by Sean Moloney, Tyler Moloney and Max Sturm, each of whom came up with big plays to slow down the Browns offense.
The Peanut Jets faced the Peanut Steelers in an impressive game. The Jets' hard work and team effort showed when Jake Formisano got a great hand off from Adam Rosenthal and ran it in for a touchdown. Nicholas Seyfert had a big touchdown run right down the sideline while his friends and family cheered him on. Defense was a team effort with everyone grabbing flags like crazy.
This past Sunday, the Peanut Patriots took on the Vikings and it was quite a game. With the sun shining and beautiful weather, Justin DiLeonardo, Anthony Barbuto and Dean Pagano each had long touchdown runs.
The Patriots' CJ Demers scored a long touchdown after he picked the ball off the ground on an errant handoff. Next came a one-yard pass from CJ to Richie Kevan who was off to the races for his first touchdown of the season. Finally, Liam Hickey had a nice run and on defense pulled his first flag of the season. The excitement in Liam's face was priceless and is the reason we all love coaching.
The Packers won their first game of the season beating the Chiefs 30-18.
Defensively, Rob Tempesta and Eddie Fronckwicz both played an outstanding game, with Tempesta providing pass rushing and two sacks and Fronckwicz providing deep coverage, with a key second half interception and two blocked passes.
Offensively, Anthony Bonilla started the day off with a 50-yard touchdown run on the Packers' opening play. Sean Balsam and Kyle Garry directed the offense from behind the line of scrimmage; both had TD passes while dealing with a stiff Chief pass rush.
The Browns won their first game 34-30 in a comeback victory over the Vikings. The Vikings scored first on a touchdown by Mike Sweeney, followed by a 2-point conversion. The Browns struck back on a pass from Brett Davies to Matt DiCarlo, and a 2-point conversion from Davies to Aaron Powell to tie the game 8-8. The Browns took the ball back on an interception by Zack Yashnyk, and took the lead 14-8 on a touchdown run by Michael Desrochers. The Vikings then followed with two unanswered scores, a TD by Mike Sweeney with a 2-point conversion to Brian McCartin to make it 14-16. A touchdown and 2-point conversion by Mike Sweeney to made it 24-14 Vikings. The Browns cut the lead to 24-20 on a pass from Brett Davies to Matt DiCarlo. The Vikings followed with a TD pass to Dennis Donovan to make the score 30-20 Vikings. The Browns scored a touchdown on a pass from Davies to DiCarlo to make the score 30-26 Vikings. A sack for a safety by Matt Dicarlo cut it to 30-28, and gave the Browns another possession with only 2 1/2 minutes to go. The Browns scored the final touchdown on a pass from Zack Yashnyk to Matt Dicarlo to pull ahead 34-30.
The 2-0 Giants faced off against the 0-2 Steelers in what can only be described as a classic game of flag football.
The Giants opened up the scoring with a long TD run by PJ Spadalik and converted on the extra point with Joe Valente throwing to Justin Dicicco for the full seven. The Giants had two interceptions one each by Frank Zazzarino and Liam Walsh, during the first half.
The Steelers opened up the second half by scoring 14 unanswered points and the score was quickly 14-7. Then Joe Valente hit PJ Spadalik on a pass which PJ took the rest of the way for a score. The Steelers then scored again, when QB Mike Alonso scored on pass play. Then with two minutes left in the game, the Giants drove down field ending it with PJ, again running the ball in from midfield. The Giants elected to go for the win down 20-19 they decided to go for a 2-point conversion. With 52 seconds remaining, the ball was handed to PJ again, this time PJ faked the run and hit a wide open Tom Dwyer for the two and a 21-20 lead. The Steelers drove down field with 48 seconds left and their drive was ended on a third down play in which they were stopped on the one-yard line.
The Steelers playing without their number one quarterback showed plenty of heart and determination. Michael A. stepped up and had his best game of the season. Michael threw for one TD, caught four passes for over 60 yards and scored a TD. Prateek K. not only scored on a 35 yard TD pass but also had a great game on defense, putting crazy pressure on the Giants quarterbacks. Nico kept the Steelers in the game to the very end with 2 TD passes, one TD reception and two interceptions. TJ playing center for the 1st time made great snap after great snap and was all over the field on defense. Jack and Gregory also had solid games. Big hand to the Giants for fighting back and pulling off a hard earned victory. Props to PJ, Liam and Tom who had big games for the Giants.
The JV Raiders started the 2005 season with one loss and one win. In the first game they were led on offense by Ross Flanagan and Richard Sullivan, who each had two touchdowns. The Raiders were outscored by the Giants 38-26. In the second game the defense was much improved thanks to the play of Paul McHugh and Joe McBane. Paul's tight coverage on the outside and a big interception by Joey helped shutdown the Steelers. On the offensive side of the ball, Andrew Presta had the game's most exciting play when he ran for a touchdown after his handoff collision with the quarterback.
In the Raiders third game the team won a hard-earned victory 20-12. Nick Panza threw a long touchdown pass and he ran in a key 2-point conversion after Michael Hoffman's diving catch just inside the end zone. Patrick Lively showed off some nifty moves on a long touchdown run that tied the game 12-12. On defense Patrick and Jack Persampire each recorded an interception to hold down a tough Patriot squad.
The JV Falcons beat the Colts 37-24 in a very closely contested game. Joe Morante scored his first touchdown of the year on a nice catch and run from a pass by Mike Neglia. Anthony McNight turned in a big gainer with a long pass reception that helped set up a Falcons score. Jake Dickinson turned in another solid game at quarterback while Bobby McKnight and Chris Romano were rock solid on defense.
The JV Jets continued their winning ways with a 27-14 victory over the Eagles. Dominick Cotrone played an outstanding game, scoring twice and grabbing numerous flags on critical plays. Brian Mazza took a handoff and completed a perfectly executed "shovel" pass to Vincent Mavaro for a TD. Vincent also had an excellent game at quarterback while Michael Castagnaro was solid on both sides of the ball.
The Vikings beat the Chiefs in the varsity division 39-33 in their most competitive game this season. With two minutes left in the game, the score was tied at 33-33. Touchdowns were scored by Joe Edwards, Devin Bartlett, and Brian Mahon. Extra points were made by Mike Tuzzolo and Devin Bartlett. Joe Edwards grabbed an excellent interception to keep the Vikings ahead. Zach Pardo and Russ Schwartz caught the ball and made great yardage. Nick Schiano kept the defense strong chasing the quarterback. Tom Gelbach and Mike Tuzzolo grabbed the flag on the quarterback preventing pass completions. Nicholas Ceriello played strong defense blocking a potential touchdown pass.
The Jets defeated the Patriots 32-21 in a closely played game. The Jets were able to overcome some sloppy defense and made some big plays defensively when they needed them led by Alex Brosnan, Steve Jones, Sal Strano and Thomas Pich. The offense struggled, but got a big day out of Steven Harris with 4 scores. Sal Strano had an impressive run for a score. Perry DiMarco completed some nice passes as did Joe Brosnan. John Santamaria had a key sack.
