Nassau County 14th District Legislator David Mejias said it is very important to him to bring government to the people.

"I've probably held over 30 town hall meetings including tax grievance and exemption seminars, having the EPA come down and updated the community every year on the status of the cleanup of the Liberty Site," the Farmingdale native explained.

He also touts not voting to raise people's taxes while in office during his first term.

"Your town taxes are going up, your school taxes are going up, but not your county taxes," Mejias explained.

Before addressing building housing for young people, Mejias said there is a necessity for new jobs.

"We need to create the types of high tech, high paying jobs so that young people can afford to live here," Mejias explained. "My plan is to work with Grumman. We have county property right near the Grumman plant right now. We are going to enter into a partnership with them where they would subsidize workforce housing for young people who are working at Grumman. We can create those 500 jobs here so that when our kids go to college, they can come back and actually live here."

Cracking down on pedophiles is another important issue to Mejias. He wants to see through a companion law to Megan's Law that "would make it illegal for any Level II or III sex offender to live near a school or a park."

Throughout his first term in office, Legislator Mejias said he has made public safety a top priority.

"We hired 337 police officers already, more than the previous 10 years combined and we have another class of 150 going in in October," Mejias explained.

He has supported the county's purchase of more "green" renewable energy and banned the use of ATVs in county parks and preserves.

Through the Nassau County legislature, Mejias boasts securing $125,000 for various projects in the Village of Farmingdale. He has also distributed close to $40,000 in community redevelopment money to his local fire departments, further ensuring his constituents' safety.

If re-elected Mejias would serve Farmingdale, Levittown, North Massapequa, Plainedge, Plainview, Old Bethpage, North Wantagh and the eastern portion of Massapequa.

"These communities are great places to live," Mejias said. " I love going down and meeting with the fire departments and going to Farmingdale football games. This is the greatest job I've ever had. And because they care about where they live, it's an honor to serve them."

Mejias said he makes himself easily accessible to his constituents and enjoys interacting with them.

"Getting things done for them really is the job satisfaction that I get out of it," Mejias said.

Mejias, who is running on the Democratic, Independence and Working Families party lines, serves as chairperson of the Economic and Community Development and Labor committees, as well as the Minority Affairs Committee. He also serves as a member of the Finance, Judiciary, and Health and Social Services committees.

Mejias is an attorney with law offices in Westbury and Hempstead and currently resides in North Massapequa.
