Although its location has varied, the US Post Office has been a part of Farmingdale's Main Street since 1845. Charles A. Post, named postmaster by President William Howard Taft in 1911, located the post office near the site of the current Schmidt's Hardware Store. The steeple of the Methodist Episcopal Church (1843-1926) can also be seen in this photo of Main Street looking south, in which a horse and buggy share the street with a horseless carriage.
