On July 31, 1845, President James Polk appointed John Monfort as the founding postmaster of Farmingdale.

In those days post offices were located in various stores in town and the mail came to town by train. The post offices were located near the railroad station. Home delivery of mail began in 1927 with two letter carriers delivering the mail. Now we have 68 carriers and 43 routes and a total of 125 employees.

We have been at our current location on Main Street since 1962. With the growth of Farmingdale's industrial area, the mail volume and revenue grew. Traditionally, our Post Office is one of the largest revenue producing offices in New York State.

As many of you might know, we are looking for a location to house our letter carriers because our building is so congested. We have no plans to leave our current location on Main St. We still have our window and Post Office Box service there.

The Postal Service has changed a great deal since 1845 and our mail is processed by automation through bar code readers. Just to let you know if you use the Internet, you have a Post Office in your computer at usps.com. We say why stand on line when you can go online and order stamps, print labels to send packages and even get carrier pickup service. Through all the inventions and changes one thing will always remain the same, we are committed to serving the mailing needs of the Farmingdale community for at least another 160 years.
