Hampton Air East continued their terrific play as they beat Mers Pub 16-6 and maintained their two game division lead, improving their record to 6-1 while the loss dropped Mers to 4-4. With the score 4-2 going into the third Ron Schwabe took a 3-1 pitch deep for a grand slam to break the game open. The rest of Hampton's bats were hot as well with everyone in the lineup getting at least two hits with Rookie Joe Auer going 4-4 in addition to making a great catch in the OF. On the mound, Tom Giorelle pitched a terrific game as he stayed ahead of the Mers batters all night. By the way, has anyone seen Hal Edelman's HR bat, please contact Ed ASAP. The boys from Built-More Builders won their second straight with a 19-13 victory over Granny O'Sheas to stay close to Hampton Air. BNB is now 4-3 in second two games behind East while O'Sheas continues to struggle, falling to 2-5. After BMB jumped out to an early lead, Granny's battled back on rookie Kevin Donnelly's monstrous two-run HR (did that ball land yet?) and Dave Aitchison's two RBI hit. Even with the hot hitting of Robbie Kirk (4/4 with three RBIs) throughout the game, Granny's couldn't nudge out a win this week. One thing to note was a great sliding catch by Al Celeste in right center in the 5th inning to help shut down a Built More rally. Thanks for the hustle Al. For BNB, Brian Tinney filled in on the mound and was able to hold down the potent Granny O'Shea's lineup. Brian received plenty of help from infielders Rich D'Amico and Bill Hartenshine, who both handled numerous chances when BMB needed them most. The offense was good, early and often, with Tom "T" Ball, Tom Dittmeier, Joe Manning, Bill Hartenshine, John Defalco, Jerry Mazza and Dan Arenholz all notching multiple hits. Tom Dittmeier was especially impressive with 4 hits including a HR. Also for BMB, "T" Ball ran his consective hit streak to 10 before it ended. BMB will need to stay hot when they take on the powerhouse and still undefeated Synergy team this Friday. As just mentioned, Synergy continues to be on a roll as no one has been able to stop them so far. Although M&T played them tough, they came up on the short end of the 11-8 final despite getting tremendous defensive games from Rich Peccia, John Cardile, Phil Catalano, Brian Samut and Rich McClorey. M&T pitcher, Mark Lubowsky, threw an outstanding game however it was not enough as Synergy went to 7-0. M&T started out strong, putting up four in the first but Synergy bounced back. With the score at 7-7, M&T broke the tie on a Brian Samut triple but again Synergy came back and pushed across three in the home half of the eighth to give them the win. With the loss M&T fell to 3-4. Barco kept on Synergy's heels with a 14-7 win over a struggling Bethpage PT team, who now has lost their fourth straight falling to 2-5. The offensive slump continued for Bethpage, this time the hits fell in but the lack of the "big hit" was felt as too many scoring opportunities were wasted. Bethpage, down 1-0, finally threatened in the third. They loaded the bases with none out, but the threat evaporated as a strikeout and force at home nearly snuffed out the rally. But Frank Aimetti came through with a two-out, two-run single (the first of his 3 hits) to give Bethpage a 2-1 lead which Barco immediately reclaimed with two of their own on Tony Falcone's clutch single. Bethpage tied it in the fifth with Jack Brosnan's hit driving in Mike Colecchia, who had doubled but Barco again countered with a three-spot to retake the lead at 6-3, on two out hits by Steve Jacobson (two RBIs) and Terry McPartland. In the seventh a bases loaded one out scenario for PT yielded only 1 run on John Cernuto's sac fly to close the gap to 6-4 but Barco answered in the bottom half on a Kevin Moloney HR. In the eighth Bethpage again threatened with a big inning, loading the bases with one out only to score one run. Now at 6-5, Bethpage paid for their lost opportunities, as Barco, cashing in on their chances, scored seven big runs in the eighth to put the close game suddenly out of reach. Big hits in the inning were Rick Pedone's three bagger and run producing hits from Tony Falcone, Steve Jacobson, Dave Ringer, Kevin Moloney (two) and Steve Schwind. Bethpage again threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with none out (highlighted by Doug Dervin's third hit of the game), but again came up short as John Leone's two-RBI sac fly proved to be the only scoring of the inning. Bethpage loaded the bases each of the last three innings with none or one out and got only four runs, all on sac flys. The final two games, Bar Boy vs. Changing Times & Singletons vs. Moby, no results were reported.
