In order to make her confirmation this year Howitt seventh-grader Nicole Rizzo must first complete 20 hours of community service.

While other students chose to visit local nursing homes or teach religious education, Rizzo wanted to make a difference on a more global level. Starting in January, Rizzo researched a website that gives information on how to help troops overseas and chose a solider to send care packages to.

"I decided to dedicate my time to helping our troops in Iraq fighting the war on terrorism," Rizzo explained. "I picked AnySolider.com because it had a lot of soldiers that needed things. I have so far chosen one soldier, Jennifer Cote who is in Mosul, Iraq. I chose another one earlier, but I didn't get the package out in time and that group moved."

In addition to an array of goodies and personal hygiene items, Rizzo goes one step further and personalizes her packages with a small note and her school photo.

"They say you can't expect a note back, but that's okay," Rizzo explained. "It is important to get things together and packaged fast, because the soldiers are always on the move. I sent her T-shirts, shampoo, conditioner, greeting cards, magazines, crossword puzzles, chocolate, candy and some little games."

Nicole's mother, Mary Rizzo, is proud of what her daughter has accomplished in such a short time.

"I think Nicole made a great choice to show our soldiers support," said the elder Rizzo. "She has done a wonderful job researching and reading about their needs, going out to the stores and buying these things that we take for granted, but will probably mean the world to them over there."

Rizzo is making her confirmation on May 25 and Mary Rizzo hopes her daughter's actions will prompt others to follow in her footsteps.

"I hope many will read this article and be inspired to do the same," Rizzo's mother said.

Rizzo lives in Farmingdale with her parents Thomas and Mary and her brother, Eddie.
