Donald J. Phelan, 83, of Cranford, NJ, died on Dec. 18, 2004 at the Father Hudson House in Elizabeth, NJ. Mr. Phelan was born in Manhattan and was raised in Pleasantville, NY. He lived in Farmingdale and Lakewood, NJ, before recently moving to Cranford. He retired in 1998 as a professional photographer after owning his own business, Don Phelan, Inc., since 1980. During WWII he served with the US Navy as an aerial photographer first class where he earned his air crew wings and the Philippine Liberation Medal with a Bronze Star.
Mr. Phelan was a past president of the Viceroy Civic Association of Farmingdale as well as being a past president of the LI Advertising Club. He was a member of the Navy League and was a past president of the Jets Parking and Chowder Society.
Mr. Phelan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lillian Chester Phelan; two sons, Joseph Phelan of Madison, CT, and Don Phelan of Avon, CT; four daughters, Beth Brown of Richmond, VA, Nina Aldrich of Oakhill, VA, Janet Collins of Cranford and Winnie Scuteri of Clinton, NJ. Also surviving is a sister Eileen Sobka of Long Beach, CA, and 14 grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by the Gray Memorial Funeral Home, Cranford. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Dec. 22 at St. Michael's RC Church, Cranford. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Father Hudson House, 111 DeHart Pl., Elizabeth, NJ.
