The Village of Farmingdale, in its continuing efforts to make our streets as safe as possible, has put into place an aggressive plan to help curtail speeding. Reacting to numerous resident complaints of cars speeding on their streets, Village Trustee Ted Dorfmeister, suggested that the village use an electronic speed enforcement sign to alert drivers of the speed limit and how fast they are actually driving in an effort to increase awareness and decrease accidents.
The village investigated the cost of renting one of the units and inter-governmentally was able to avail itself of unit courtesy of the Town of Oyster Bay (thanks to Supervisor John Venditto and the Town of Oyster Bay Board). The current unit is being rotated among the streets that have had numerous complaints. The sign is a visible reminder to motorists that they are driving too fast. It's easy to forget just how fast you are driving; hopefully this will slow them down. The village is also currently reviewing options to purchase their own sign, utilizing a New York State Department of Transportation grant.
The Nassau County Police Department's 8th Precinct, at my request, has also initiated speed patrols along many of our village streets. Police radar units and unmarked cars have been positioned on various streets including: Conklin Street, Clinton Street and Thomas Powell Boulevard. These speed patrols will continue at those and other locations throughout the village. Our intent is to increase safety and driver awareness.
