Regular season action ended this past Sunday for the players in Farmingdale's PAL-NFL Flag Football League. The younger boys and girls celebrated a very successful first season, while the older kids were prepping for the playoffs. Here are the highlights.
The Peanut Division finished their schedule Sunday. The season was fun for all the boys and girls as they learned to run and throw the football. Great play was turned in by all players on the Jets, Giants, 49ers, and Panthers. After the long grueling season, the boys and girls received their trophies and NFL Certificates signed by NFL Commissioner Paul Taglibue. Here are some highlights from the final Peanut Division games.
The Panthers were up to their usual tricks on Halloween to keep the aggressive Jets defense off balance. A double reverse by Sean McCann, Paul Morante and Anthony Morante led to a touchdown as Anthony scampered the length of the field. Conner Costarella threw to Tommy Donovan off a halfback option for another long gain. Tim Dolan and Jack Nonnenmann led the defense pulling flags from all directions. The coaches are very proud of the teamwork and sportsmanship displayed each week.
The Peanut NY Giants played their final game Sunday with Joseph Hunt scoring the Giants last touchdown of the season.
Coaches Chris Demers and Fran DiLeonardo are very proud of the Giants' accomplishments this year. The team received their trophies to celebrate the end of an outstanding first season. The Peanut NY Giants are: CJ Demers, Justin DiLeonardo, Joseph Hunt, Rory Kennedy, Richard Kevon, Jack McCaffery, Gillian Reilly and Nicholas Seyfert.
The team had so much fun and wish they could keep playing. Only 10 months to NFL Flag Football 2005 kickoff.
For the Junior Varsity Cowboys and Jets, Sunday's game was all about defense. The Cowboys defense dominated the Jets during the first half of the game. The Jets made it past midfield only once during the entire first half. The Jets defense was not too shabby either. The Jets defense held the Cowboys to only one touchdown in the first half. More importantly, the Jets defense was able to deny the Cowboys the critical extra point.
In the second half, it was the Jets defense that dominated the Cowboys. The Cowboys made several first downs on some terrific plays; however the Jets defense was able to keep the Cowboys from scoring again. The Jets offense was still struggling to find an opening in the Cowboy's defense and finally found one late in the second half. On a brilliantly executed triple reverse, Tyler Sullivan took the ball and handed it to Liam Walsh, who handed off to Aaron Powell. Aaron ran up the line to score the Jets only touchdown of the game. The Jets then scored the two-point conversion on a beautifully executed double reverse from Tyler Sullivan to Liam Walsh. Liam faked the handoff to Aaron Powell and ran up the line to score the extra points. On the Cowboys last drive, with only seconds remaining in the game, Aaron Powell intercepted a pass, intended for a Cowboy's receiver, to end the game. The final score was Jets 8, Cowboys 6.
Great hustling & defense by all. Key flag pulls by Evan Lenci, Andrew Phillips, Tyler Sullivan & Aaron Powell. Excellent hustling, pass coverage and offensive pressure provided by Tyler Byrnes, Jack Persampire and Angelo Mauro.
Cowboys' coaches Jeff and Joe could not have been more pleased with the play of their team. The Cowboys played short-handed and out-manned, but they never gave up. Paul C., Colleen, Alex, Paul M., Nico and Chris showed great heart and determination. Get well wishes go out to Brendan and Jeff. The team is going to need them next week for their big playoff game against the Giants.
The Junior Varsity Falcons ended their regular season with a 21-12 win over the Giants to finish with four wins and three losses. Michael Alonso, Brett Davies, Timothy Manolt, Justin DiCicco and Jonathan Sindicic all contributed to the Falcons 21-point scoring effort. Robert Leone and Matthew Lubliner successfully ran the ball for the Falcons. The defense was let by Timothy Manolt (two interceptions) while Justin DiCicco and Michael Alonso led the team with three tags each. The Giants were led on offense by Jordan McCauley and Mat Dittmeir who teamed up for their first score. All of the kids had a great season and are looking forward to the playoffs.
Special thanks from the Falcons and all the other teams to Ray Webb and Denis Donovan for all of their hard work this season in making Flag Football possible in Farmingdale.
