The boys and girls of the Farmingdale PAL-NFL Flag Football League experienced their first taste of "football weather" on Sunday. Oct. 17. But despite the chilly temperatures, there was no shortage of thrilling and well- played games. Here are the highlights.
The Peanut 49ers and Jets squared off for the second time this season and as most people expected it was a battle from the start. The first quarter was a defensive struggle but before the half ended, the 49ers offense got into a rhythm led by Vincent Fisher and Jame Grassi. Great contributions were made by Brandon McGill and Jeffrey Lopez. On the defensive side for the 49ers, Andres Martinez stopped more than one touchdown attempted by the Jets. Coach Cappellino and Coach Simmons, as always, were proud of the efforts of all of their 49ers. Game balls were presented to Andre Martinez and Trevor Clark.
The Peanut Jets had plenty of highlights of their own. Matthew Presta made a beautiful run down the length of the field and he would have gotten a touchdown if he didn't lose his flag belt! Also Thomas Weber faked out a strong defense and ran for a 40 yard touchdown. Sean and Tyler Maloney improve with each game and had some very nice runs as well. Our big guy, Kevin Costanza ran a beautiful play for another touchdown this week. Brendon Gallagher and James Cavanol fought through the bitter cold for some nice plays. Julia Presta and Kevin Mumolo got hit hard by the 49rs defense but jumped right back into the game and played great! Good job guys and girls.
The Peanut Division NY Giants had another great day against the Panthers on Sunday. The Giants moved the ball well. CJ Demers scored on a long touchdown after a successful double reverse. Jack McCaffery scored a touchdown of his own on a run right up the middle.
Justin DiLeonardo led the Giants' stifling defense with two interceptions. The second interception on the Panthers' 10-yard line resulted in a touchdown on the next play. Justin was able to run it with the last defender unable to reach him due to a great decoy pattern into the back of the end-zone by Nicholas Seyfert.
The Giants are executing better and better each week while having fun playing football. We can't wait for our next game.
Another great week of football for the Peanut Panthers. They continue to learn the fundamentals of the game and improve with each game. The defense was led by great plays by Sean McCann, Paul Morante and Anthony Morante. Running the pigskin for long gains were Tim Dolan and Jack Nonnenmann. The coaches are very proud of the effort that all the players made.
The Jets beat the Giants 14-8 in a rematch of the season opener won by the Giants. The Jets scored on their first play from the line of scrimmage. Matthew D'Antonio handed off to Sean Timmons, who turned and threw a perfect pass back to Matthew, who raced to the end-zone. Ryan Psinakis caught the two-point conversion pass from Sean to stake the Jets to a quick 8-0 lead. On the Giants second possession, the Jets' Bryan Kaufman intercepted a pass deep in Giants territory. The Jets quickly struck for a score with Bryan throwing a five yard TD to Sean but they were unable to score the extra point. The Giants scored a touchdown with a great run on the last play of the first half and converted the two point conversion to cut the score to 14-8.
The game's defensive intensity began to pickup in the second half. The Jets' defense was led by the tight man-to-man coverage and great flag pulling efforts of Marc Dittmeier, Kevin Gallagher, Gregory Maghjakian, and Chris Moloney. Sean made a key interception in the Giants end-zone to end one Giants drive. On the last play of the game, Ryan batted away the Giants "Hail Mary" to preserve the victory. The Giants and Jets' coaches congratulated the kids on their great effort and sportsmanship.
The JV Bengals beat the Giants 20-18 sparked by the spirited play of Denis Donovan. In his first full game back from an injury, Denis galloped 30 yards to open the scoring for the Bengals. Kyle Garry hit Vincent Mavaro for a catch and run touchdown, while Matt Ingordo also added a key touchdown. The difference in this game however was a two point conversion scored by Cara Lynn Kelly on a beautiful end-around run.
On defense, the Bengals were led by Billy Pickett who refused to give an inch!
The Raiders regrouped last Sunday's loss to the Eagles; with a 32 to 6 victory over the Cowboys. Following last week's season low offensive production, the Raiders rebounded with a season high 32 points. The Raiders offensive was led by Raymond Webb's two touchdown performance and Rob Tempesta's game ending touchdown reception, with the clock expiring.
Defensively, the Raider's held the Cowboys offensive to six points with strong defensive efforts by TJ Knight and James Pitch. John Ragno's interception late in the fourth quarter shutdown the Cowboys final offensive drive, culminating a great team effort.
The JV Falcons beat the Panthers 28-8. The Falcons were led by its top touchdown scorer Timothy Manolt, other scorers included Robert Leone, Jonathan Sindicic and Justin DiCicco. Our record this year is now 3 - 3.
The Jets beat the Patriots 14-6 Sunday. On the Jets' second offensive drive of the game, Evan Lenci took a hand-off and ran for a touchdown. Then, on a brilliantly executed double-reverse, Angelo Mauro hand-off the ball to Evan Lenci who handed-off the ball to Tyler Byrnes, who ran the ball for the two extra points. The Patriots responded with a touchdown of their own on their next drive, but the Jets defense was able to keep the Patriots from scoring the extra point. The score remained Jets 8, Patriots 6 until late in the second half. On the third down of a Jets offensive drive, Tyler Byrnes connected with a pass to Angelo Mauro who ran for a first down. On third down, Aaron Powell threw a perfect pass to Tyler Byrnes, who with triple coverage in the end zone jumped up to make the catch and the touch down. Andrew Phillips took the hand-off for the extra-point but was denied, at the line of scrimmage, by the Patriots defense. Both teams played great. The Patriots defense was solid and lightning fast. The difference in this game, however, was the defensive coverage, pass rushing and flag pulls provided by Evan Lenci, Angelo Mauro, Jack Persampire, Andrew Phillips, Aaron Powell, Joe Salonia and Tyler Sullivan.
In the Varsity Division, the Jets vs. 49ers played an outstanding game on Sunday. For the Jets, Zach Hirsh had three touchdown catches, Brian Mahon and Joe Edwards each had a touchdown catch. Corey Simone and Chris Saunders each had an interception. Carina Bonilla had her longest run of the year. Kristin Morrison also had a good day running. Michael Tuzzuolo had a good day rushing the quarterback.
All the players had a great time and are getting ready for the tournament next week.
