After five weeks of play, the boys and girls of Farmingdale's PAL-NFL Flag Football League are really catching on. From the Peanuts to the Varsity Division, everyone's play book is getting bigger and better. Here are this week's highlights.
The Peanuts Jets had another great game this week starting with a huge run by Matthew Presta who ran halfway down the field. Kevin Costanza had an exceptional game, scoring three touchdowns. Thomas Weber ran like lightning for a 40-yard touchdown, thanks to a great hand off by Tyler Moloney. Not to be left out, his twin brother, Sean had a beautiful run for 15 yards. Julia Presta played a very good defensive game along with Brendan Gallagher and James Cavanol. Kevin Mumolo showed great improvement with a very nice run for 10 yards. Thanks again to the Peanut Jets.
The Panthers used a double reverse with Tommy Donovan, Conner Costrarella and Jack Nonnenmann to get an early touchdown against the aggressive Jets' defense. The Panthers kept the Jets guessing with a play action pass to Alex Stein who took the pigskin the length of the field. Sean McCann kept constant pressure on the Jets' quarterbacks while Tim Dolan was in pursuit of flags all game. After the long hard battle, the teams shook hands at midfield in a show of sportsmanship.
The 49ers took on the mighty Giants and it was a battle from the opening kick-off to the very last play. Andres Martinez had a spectacular run, weaving in and out of Giant defenders to score a tremendous touchdown. A handoff from Jeff Lopez to crazy legs Mike Simmons produced a long run from deep in their own territory. On the defensive side, Nick Cappellino came up with a key drive ending interception. Game balls were presented to Michael Simmons and Nick Cappellino. Coach Cappellino and Coach Simmons, as always, were proud of the efforts of all of the 49ers.
The Peanut Giants have also made tremendous progress since week one. This week's game against the 49ers started off with CJ Demers able to break away from defenders and toss a seven-yard pass to Justin DiLeonardo who ran the length of the field for a touchdown. On the next offensive set, Gillian Reilly took a hand-off and ran up the middle untouched for her first touchdown of the season. Joseph Hunt rounded out the scoring for the Giants with a touchdown run of his own. The Giants are playing an excellent team game. Coaches Chris Demers and Fran DiLeonardo are proud of the team's accomplishments and are certain the real NY Giants would be too.
Led by their defense, the Jets beat the Bengals 32-12 on Sunday. After working hard on flag pulling drills at practice, the boys were ready to show on how far they have grown as a team. Matthew D'Antonio, Bryan Kaufman and Sean Timmons help lead the way with key interceptions. Gregory Maghjakian, playing his best game of the season, batted down a pass and Kevin Gallagher saved a sure Bengals touchdown by coming from across the field to snare the ball carrier's flag. Marc Dittmeier, Chris Moloney, Ryan Psinakis and Jonathan Ascatigno played tremendous man-to-man coverage that helped limit the Bengals' potent passing game. The Jets offense was once again balanced with big running and passing plays. Chris, Ryan, Jonathan, and Marc had some key runs and Matthew picked up a big first down on a pass down the sideline. Their teamwork helped set up the Jets' touchdown scores. Kevin and Gregory scored their first touchdowns of the season. Kevin also had a long reception that led to one of Sean's two touchdowns. Bryan scored a touchdown and caught a two-point conversion as well. The Jets' continue to receive great quarterback play from so many players that the coach couldn't remember who was at the helm for each score.
Hard work and a never give up attitude led the Cowboys to their first win of the season. The Boys led by Brendan Nocella (four touchdwon passes), Colleen Patterson (three touchdown receptions) and Nicholas Rivera's game winning touchdown defeated a very tough Falcons squad. Tim Manolt and Davies led the Falcons. The final score was Cowboys 26, Falcons 24.
The Eagles ended the Raiders winning streak at four, with a 31 to 20 victory Sunday. The Raiders started the game with a long touchdown reception by John Ragno; only to be answered by a sustained Eagle drives of their own. The first half ended with the two teams in a virtual dead lock thanks to fine defensive work by Raymond Web and William Hassett. In the second half, three Eagle interceptions lead to two of the teams' three-second half touchdowns. The combination of turnovers and a strong Eagle defense held the Raiders to a single second half touch down, and their lowest offensive production of the year.
The JV Patriots beat the Panthers 38-22 with a total team effort. The offense hit on all cylinders, led by Nick Panza, Nathan Kirchiem and James Mangione. On defense, the Pats were up for the challenge from the highflying Cats, thanks to stellar play from Megan Draghi, Evan Saur, Sarah Hecht and Anthony Mangione. The Pats improved to 4-1.
The Jets beat the Bengals 24-18 in a battle of two evenly matched teams. The Jets' scoring began on the very first play of the game when Evan Lenci took a hand-off from the five-yard line and ran the entire length of the field. Evan also scored the Jets' next touchdown on a running play. The Bengals kept it close with a couple of scores including a spectacular twisting run by Matt Ingordo. Jen Sweeney also had a touchdown run, while Frank Pelligrino and Brian Mazza also played well on offense. On defense, Billy Pickett and Paul O'Donnell led the Bengals. But the Jets would never allow the Bengals to pull ahead. The Jets scored their third touchdown when Angelo Mauro threw a pass to Jack Persampire. Jack avoided the Bengal defenders and ran in for the score. The final Jets scoring drive started when K. Aaron Powell took the hand-off from the five-yard line and ran for a first down. Andrew Phillips then took the hand-off and ran up the line to score the game-winning touchdown. Great hustle by everyone, interceptions by Jack Persampire and Evan Lenci.
